Do they ship outside Canada? I have a US-based reshipper if need be.

Looks like they do ship to the US, I did a test order and shipping seems to be a flat-rate of $10.50.

Damn, Von Sternberg is out of stock already. Was interested in that one but not enough to pay even 50% off prices.

Only accepts Canadian/US billing addresses too. That rules me out.

Well that was fun.

I placed an order from Unobstructed View for the deluxe Maniac Blu/DVD/CD, Barry Lyndon, The Night of The Hunter, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and They Live By Nightfor $20 CDN a piece. I had Eating Raoul in my cart, but it was sold out by the time I got to checkout. I didn't realize they have free shipping at $100, which was exactly my total, so it works out to a nice deal! Now I'll see how their service is.

And while I got to set up my shipping address I can add the United States as a country but can't choose a state just the Canadian provinces.

I suspect Unobstructed View contractually aren't allowed to ship out of Canada as they are the Canadian distributor for Criterion.

That's what I suspected and understand their reasoning if that is the case since they are also cheaper prices than Criterion prices in the US. That's why Greg's comment confused me at first since I thought they were specifically a Canadian distributor.

Can’t remember—does the ny’s clue come out on ny’s eve or day?

Besides a clue about Fellini for upgrades/and or Box, I’m hoping some more Mike Leigh. High Hopes, Secrets & Lies, and Career Girls seem inevitable so I hope they release something in 2020

Usually it was NYE, but the 2019 clue came out on NY.

All disc based content is included from the previous Blu-ray releases. The only things missing are some of the essays and interviews from the booklets (although there is new content for Fanny & Alexander.)

Sorry for the confusion, when koberulz asked if they shipped internationally, I put a random Criterion title in my cart and changed my shipping country to US with a random zip code and it showed flat rate shipping : $10.50 but I guess I didn't scroll all the way up because I just tried it again and it does say "Sorry, this item cannot be shipped outside of Canada." at the top of the checkout page.

That's strange...I don't recall seeing "Shipping only to Canada" when I placed my order. I'm guessing they got bombarded with US orders. Anyway, they ran my card so I'm hoping it goes through

I was also amazed by this film, and I believe A Hidden Life conjures up A LOT of themes and motifs from Days of Heaven. Malick has frustrated me with his last few films, and even The Tree of Life was a film I wanted to be more narrative-driven, but I know that's his style, of visual poetry and meditation-cinema. His last film I truly loved was The New World, but after seeing A Hidden Life, I was emotionally DEVASTATED at times watching this film. It reminded me of my grandmother talking about her life as a teenager growing up during the war in the Austrian/Bavarian Alps working in a little village on a farm and picking potatoes and milking cows. She lived a hidden life, surrounded by pristine nature, effervescent air, and pure spring water. If my grandmother was still alive today (she died 5 years ago), she probably would have related to this film A LOT. Watching this film, it amazed me how during one of the most atrocious wars in history, that one couldn't even tell there was even a war happening, being in the middle of the countryside protected by majestic mountains all around. The main character of Franz Jägerstätter was beatified and made a martyr by the Roman Catholic Church, and for good reason. His defiance in the face of the evil Nazis and amongst his fellow villagers was a true act of courage.

If I could criticize this movie at all, it would have to be its running time. I think the film would have benefitted from being cut 20-30 minutes shorter than its 3 hour running time. But Terrence Malick isn't known for films on the shorter side. Every movie of his is poetic, and epic in size, whether its about love, or war, or morality itself. This is a film to behold, to admire, to LOVE.

I loved your review by the way, Great Owl.
The opening of Tree of Life was my Rosetta Stone for Malick, and I have felt since then that Malick's work is showing the Way of Nature, the Way of Grace, and their dynamic. A Hidden Life leans on the Way of Grace, and those long shots and cuts to details like the reflection of water or mist blowing over grass communicate Grace visually in a way that exposition couldn't. I'm in awe at the way Malik expresses his theology using film instead of books. And it's so clear.

I still need to rewatch Malik's Pre-Tree of Life work to see if it's also working out the Grace/Nature interaction. Based on the comparisons of his earlier and later work I read, I suspect they are. Can't wait to revisit.

The New World for me was the ultimate Grace/Nature interaction. My Rosetta Stone for Malick. The most beautiful visual poetry I may have ever seen on film, period. The New World made my soul transcend to nirvana in the final few minutes of the movie when Wagner's music interplayed with the poetry on screen. The same can be said for several moments of The Thin Red Line too, when Private Witt goes AWOL and finds himself near wild heaven amongst the carefree people of Melanesia in the South Pacific. A beautiful interplay of Grace/Nature. One man's dream to find "something that's his, and make an island for himself." I was emotionally devastated by both of these films and will always have a special place in my heart for either movie, but especially The New World, when I personally traveled to cinematic nirvana, 24 frames a second.
