Last Tango in Paris has undergone a 4K DCP restoration. It will be screening twice in Chicago at the Gene Siskel Film Center on the 12th and on the 16th. Anyone know if Criterion might release it? It is about time for me to revisit this film as it has been at least 10 years. Very reluctant to buy the old Blu-ray, though.

Shopping on Amazon and noticed that the Godzilla set is currently 50% off, if that's of interest to anyone.

Edit: The Bergman set is almost the same, at $160.

I haven’t seen anyone mention it, but I’m sure they’d want it. Definitely a strong possibility as I assume MGM still owns it. A few might get upset but I think they’d release it anyways.

So, if Criterion announces it in the next few months, you'll know whom to thank.
Napoleon is a whole different story than The Cameraman with the two different scores one by Coppola's father and the Carl Davis score. We're probably doomed to not see Napoleon in Region A. It's safe to say that The Cameraman will come out some time this year as there are no complicated rights issues involved.

You're also forgetting that they are still restoring and adding more scenes to Napoleon (iirc they added around 90 minutes of additional scenes).

On top of the already released BFI version? Also, if I remember the Coppola score is for a much shorter version of the film and not the longer cut that was released a few years ago and surely not for an even longer cut?

Question

I read somewhere on one of the forums on the this site that THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963) would be possibly be coming from Criterion. If that's true, would it be a new restoration, and not the same one from the last Blu-ray release?

Yeah, it was announced back in September that they were adding 90 minutes of footage (and scanning them in 5k). The runtime is now somewhere between 6-6.5 hours.

Cool, I might hold out on getting the BFI version for now to see if they release a longer version with the added footage.

Criterion hinted at it's release back in November in their newsletter hints. I would think that it would be from a new restoration, and I do believe that we already saw a glimpse of it in 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' during the scenes where Leonardo DiCaprio's character is imagining himself being the lead role.

I hope you're right, because if it's the same restoration on the current Blu-ray, then I'm not getting it. However, if it is a much better restoration, I will get it.

Yeah, probably. The Criterion folks talked about it at their Wexner Center panel back about six years ago, in a way that suggested (without explicitly saying so) they'd be releasing it here in the States. Well, it was six years ago, but then BFI released their edition three years ago. Given Criterion's deliberate speed at releasing things, I thought it might still be a possibility.

Glad I got the BFI now. Of course, now I'll have to get the longer release, whenever that happens.

Thinking of things Criterion promised and never delivered on...when they released Blue Is the Warmest Color back in 2014, they rushed out a basic, movie-only edition with promises that they'd do a more comprehensive special edition later on. But they never followed up on that.

XBOX S came out August 2nd 2016. So 3.5 years and I'm still waiting. Oh well. It's just a bunch of movies...but yeah Solaris has bad transfer the colors fluctuate a lot. It needs help.

First Roma, and now Marriage Story will be part of the CC. I really hope the partnership of Netflix and Criterion expands and grows. If they do get their hands on The Irishman, there wouldn't be a more opportune time to test the 4K waters.

I hope we don’t see a release of Marriage Story before we see a Criterion of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Btw, Fellini’s Casanova is now available (I think only recently) to watch free (if your library subscribes) through Hoopla. I haven’t watched yet but it looks like the transfer from the Universal DVD

Criterion had nothing to do with that not happening.
