In response to bonehica's Top 10 Post up-thread, my most frequently watched Criterions:

Z
I Know Where I'm Going
Day for Night
My Night at Maude's
The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice
12 Angry Men
The Lady Vanishes
In the Heat of the Night
Charade
The Third Man

If I were to compile a list of the Top 10 films of all time available on Criterion, none of the above would make the list. The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice makes the list even though it was released only last summer, but by now it's obvious to me that it will quickly earn its spot on the list.

They were getting in. 9 and 10...I had to make some serious Sophie's choices. So many I wanted to put in those last two slots. That being said, I'm cool with my final decision. If you've never seen Bresson's or The Archer's masterpieces...there is a flash sale imminent in the next few weeks. Just add them to your cart. Trust me. I think the last time this was asked it was for a Top 20, which was hard enough! But I'll give it a go (off the top of my head - excluding box-sets, or favourite titles that I've upgraded with other label or Region B releases):

The Third Man
Last Year at Marienbad
The Thin Red Line
High and Low
Notorious
A Matter of Life and Death
The Leopard
Solaris
La Dolce Vita
Play Time

My Top 10 are as follows, in no particular order:

Seven Samurai
The Samurai Trilogy
Hidden Fortress
Zatoichi
The Gold Rush
Diabolique
12 Angry Men
The Red Shoes
People on Sunday
Yojimbo/Sanjuro

I own each of these. But I will be the first to admit that there are a lot of Criterion releases that I have not seen. I am a charter member of The Criterion Channel, and my local library has almost every Criterion release. So I'm working my way through the collection. If, after watching one, I love it, then I'll buy it. I will only buy one if I know I will rewatch it. There are a lot films that I have enjoyed, but I don't have any desire to rewatch. I only buy titles that I know I will rewatch.

Okay, my proper top 10 *individual films included in the main line of the collection in some capacity, not necessarily whole releases* (can change depending on one's mood):

L'Avventura
Rules of the Game
Lola Montes
Love Streams
Through a Glass Darkly
La Dolce Vita
In A Lonely Place
Two-Lane Blacktop
Pierrot Le Fou
A Man Escaped

Bubbling beneath the surface: My Darling Clementine, the two Lino Brocka films, Army of Shadows, Vivre Sa Vie...

OK, my preliminary list is as follows, though in no particular order. However, I'm not including any box sets, otherwise that would be the vast majority of the list.

Mulholland Dr.
Tree of Life
Persona
The New World
L'Avventura
Breathless
Stalker
The Thin Red Line
La Dolce Vita
Heaven's Gate

Two Honorable Mentions that immediately come to mind:

Gilda
Frances Ha

I'm about to watch a new one for me - Samurai Saga. It's on the Criterion Channel. I love classic Samurai movies.

These are two Criterion Blu-rays that are each part of their own set, but I would love to see them each get their own stand-alone release:

So, if there's any member on this site that happens to be an insider for Criterion, please let the company know about this idea.

I wonder what other Fox films Criterion may have that they haven't announced yet. They've already announced All About Eve and Leave Her to Heaven, and I would assume they have more. I hope they have Pickup on South Street and Fritz Lang's Man Hunt (which would be another Twilight Time rescue).

I'm actually kind of astounded that The Last Picture Show has never received a standalone release. Morocco, too, I suppose, but I feel like if anything from the Dietrich/Von Sternberg set were to receive a standalone edition, I would guess that it would be Shanghai Express (notwithstanding their previous edition of The Scarlet Empress). In fact, for a very long time before the box set was even announced, I'd been fully expecting an announcement of Shanghai on its own, never even considering the possibility of a box set.

But yeah, again, The Last Picture Show. I know they did Five Easy Pieces, so it really sort of boggles the mind.

OK, these are definites for the Sale:

(Blind Buy)

(Blind Buy)

I've already ordered Roma, and I think it's arriving soon. I'm SO looking forward to Leave Her to Heaven, but that won't be available for ordering. And I already ordered the Antonio Gaudi film, and I'm pretty sure that will arrive a week from Tuesday. So, I'm not entirely sure if I'll go beyond those three definite selections. I probably will, I'm just not sure with what.

The Dietrich/von Sternberg set announcement was a very pleasant and welcome surprise. I'll definitely pick it up when I come across it.

Anyone know if Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman boxet is out of print? I can't find anything about it but it has been "currently unavailable" for months on the Criterion website and now it's even out of stock on Amazon.

As long as it doesn't say out of print you're good.
