But a 4K restoration was done, as confirmed by Wong Kar Wai and his studio, who also said Janus/Criterion had the rights to all 10 restorations.

He had an iconic look due in part to his surgically augmented cheeks. I recommend picking up Criterion's Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse DVD set to see some of his best work, including The Colt is My Passport, and Cruel Gun Story.

And with regards to Seijun Suzuki films in the vein of Tokyo Drifter, and Branded to Kill, I'd also recommend Arrow's release of Detective Bureau 2-3: Go to Hell, Bastards!. And If you're region free, pick up Eureka's release of Youth of the Beast, which is long overdue for a Criterion release. Both also starring Shishido.
Reminder that I need to pick up the Nikkatsu Noir set during one of the sales, really enjoyed the formentioned titles and really want to view the other ones.

That confirmation 10 months ago was that restorations were done and all 10 films would tour, but not all the films are actually being shown at the Lincoln Center Retrospective—so the information gave in an interview didn’t turn out to be completely accurate, something was out of context, or there was an unforeseen distribution problem.

I’m hoping we get everything, but the fact that Blueberry, Grandmaster, 2046, and Ashes don’t seem to be a part of the retrospective will make me wonder until the box set is actually announced

Yeah, you're safe >99% of the time.

There's been a mix of conspiracy theories and legitimate concerns over the years, but I guess that's the nature of collecting. I've had to return a couple of Criterion titles to B&N, but it was for damage that was only obvious once I got them home and opened them up. And Criterion's reputation for helping customers directly with damaged discs/booklets, and especially the "bronzing" issue that impacted some their early BD releases, is well-established.

Best Buy, however, does do that.

Didn't know that. Not a retailer I really use for BDs. I think I've only ever bought from the $5.99 bin there, so maybe I've got one of them? Not that I've had a problem.

Which is basically the same supplier/wholesaler/warehouse (ALLIANCE) as everyone else including Criterion.com

Mail-order-wise, just as a data point, when B&N recently was selling Cohen Media blu-rays for half price, it was really easy to tell the rewraps from the brand new copies. The rewraps did use the melty shrink-wrap and the new ones used the cellophane wrapping. The cellophane wrapped ones just about always arrived in pristine condition (since most of the new stock literally was brand new), while the rewraps were usually damaged or dented up in some way(s), not to mention the cases being melted some when they were rewrapped, this being older stock sitting around for a while. This distinction is more for Cohen Media, as Criterion does things differently, as discussed above.

For me it wasn't/isn't unusual to return something to B&N (online) that looks rather messed up and sometimes you don't notice it (or can't quite tell for sure) until it's been opened, so back it goes opened. They do rewrap things that have been opened and resell them. Some of you probably even own something I returned to them once upon a time.

I'm pretty sure I was in a B&N store when I overheard them talking about rewrapping things as well. So it happens in both places, online and in store.

Just not as often as some think, as others have already covered well enough. Missing stickers don't mean anything really, nor the plastic wrapping any more for Criterions, though if it's pretty melted up, more than usual...

--

Anyway, finally going to watch Paths Of Glory. Up until now still in its melty shrinkwrap, with sticker, bought near original release day; digging into the old kevyip.

This post from Jet Tone mentions 2046 has also been restored.

I know they’ve all been restored. I wasn’t questioning that

Grateful for any comments on It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Thinking of adding it as a blind-buy to my Flash Sale list. However, there is a perfectly good MGM release that does not include the "Roadshow" footage. I know the Criterion contains both cuts, but does the film itself play better in the extended version, or is it more of a curiosity? Thanks.

IMO, it leans toward being more of a curiosity, particularly with how rough some of the footage looks. The film itself is fun but much of the humour might be a bit old fashioned to some. I would suggest blind buying the MGM disc as the PQ is the same. If you love the film you can always upgrade.

Personally, I think it’s more a curiosity. The roadshow footage is carying quality (to the point where sound no longer exists in certain scenes). The “general release” version is pretty much perfect in my opinion.

General release is paced really well. Don't see how it could get better.

The theatrical release feels already too long to me.

Good stuff. Sounds like the MGM will do me fine for now. Thank you both.
