the first person who came to mind to check is Cary Grant who has been in 8. interesting question, though.

Rushmore was probably everyone's the majority of people seeing a Wes Anderson film in the cinema..
And remember there are loads of films that were deemed write offs & box office disasters that are now deemed classics. Carpenter's The Thing for one

Oooh, got my copy of Antonio Gaudi today. They told me tomorrow. I guess I have something to start watching tonight.

I've been looking forward to this. I need something like this in my life. Something about beauty, something poetic. This is what I need.

If the Flash Sale isn't next Tuesday the 25th, there's a very good chance that my tax return could post to my checking account before the sale hits. And that could be very, very bad. Like the Ghostbusters crossing the streams bad.

My two favorites—and I was there from the beginning, saw Bottle Rocket at the theater. There's a non-sequitur nature to both that I really dig. A case of YMMV as always.

As invariably happens when I find I have additional time to consider movies I might not have looked at in preparation for an upcoming sale, I rethink my wish list, further expanding it. That’s usually how I get in trouble. I come across something quite by chance, a film I might have pushed to the back of my mind, and suddenly, I’m off in a whole new direction. While this may ultimately prove costly, it’s also a great deal of fun.

Tokyo Drifter is one of the films I’ll be buying. I want to further explore Japanese cinema on a grand scale. That will include the Godzilla films before the year’s end. I came across the review for An Actor’s Revenge, and started thinking about reoccurring themes in Japanese cinema. I watched Kuroneko about three months ago, and was drawn in by the film’s artistry, combining supernatural elements with the revenge theme. With these freshly on my mind, I started to expand my scope to other similar films within the Collection that I want to add to my own.

I was looking at my box sets, thinking again about my interest in samurai films. I see that the new(er) nine disc Zatoichi: the Blind Swordsman set is currently unavailable, not shipping until March 12th, per Criterion’s site. However, Lone Wolf and Cub shows no current unavailability, and that is something I need to get. One question, though. Where would I be able to view Shogun Assassin? Or, do you all feel I am better off watching the six films in their original form before watching what is essentially an amalgamation of the first two films?

Although clearly not films about samurai, but an assassin seeking revenge for her family’s killing, I’m interested in the two Lady Snowblood films. I understand that the second film is more a political statement, and less about the physical act of taking revenge; if my cursory understanding of the two movies is true, I might draw a comparison to Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill saga, where part one is incredibly violent, and part two is more about Beatrix’ reunion with her daughter, and the climatic revenge on Bill. Interestingly, the movie Bebe wants to watch with her mother is the aforementioned Shogun Assassin. Are there fans of Lady Snowblood here? I don’t recall seeing it discussed with great frequency.

Like many of you, I’m glad to have this extra time. I can more thoroughly explore my wish list, and consider any recommendations you all might have. I’ll read any comments tonight after a few hours of much needed sleep. I sometimes deal with bouts of insomnia because of all the medications I take for my back. So, if I’m rambling a bit this morning, or my post seems a tad disjointed, I apologize. But as always, I thank you all in advance for any input you may have.

I’m excited for this sale!

Shogun Assassin is included in Criterion's LW&C set.

I would say you should watch the films in their original version first, but Shogun Assassin isn't really just a straight mash up of the first two films, as the dub changes a number of things.

Lady Snowblood is great. I think it is one of the best manga/comic adaptations ever. It takes the entire manga and remixes it to tell a complete story in one film, so the 2nd film is entirely superfluous. Watchable, but has no real reason to exist.

Really hoping it isn't very much longer until Criterion announces the release of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover.
I know they've recently announced acquisition of the rights to distribute it but I'm still paranoid that it may not come to pass if the prints are in bad shape.

Gotcha, I figured that's what it was but hoped there'd been something more in the meantime. It's such an eminently Criterion-worthy movie, but also its troubled history makes me despair of its ever getting a release.

Lady Snowblood is an essential of 70s Japanese film. Beautifully filmed, emotionally charged and Meiko Kaji embodies the role. That and the Lone Wolf and Cub set are worthy buys.

Thanks for the responses, everybody. I’m quite intrigued by both Lone Wolf and Cub and Lady Snowbird.

I discovered the joys of Zavvi this afternoon before taking a snooze. I’ve been looking for Arrow UK’s second Woody Allen blu-Ray collection of six films at a decent price. Everybody that I’ve found has been selling it for nearly a C note with shipping. Zavvi has it for $53 shipped brand new, so I had to jump on it. And now I have to figure out what to get Tuesday. Decisions, decisions!!
