Being from New England, the thought of Brady leaving the Patriots fills me with great joy, and a desire to do the Snoopy Dance. During the winter months, it feels like the local news channel doesn't want to report on anything other than the Pats and/or Brady. Of course, now that station seems to want to talk about nothing other than Brady leaving the Patriots. If only that world-wide, life-threatening Crisis Of Which We Shall Not Speak didn't take up so much damn broadcast time.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled movie discussion. Excuse me, jw007, I meant MOVIES discussion.

No worries, MOVIES are just as acceptable as the occasional SPORTS tangent too! (I'm sure people are happy the NFL had a full season)... but how about Baseball! Who is a Criterion movie lover and also plays Fantasy Baseball like me? I'm sure its a rarity! How am I going to survive without BASEBALL! Oh wait, WE HAVE BULL DURHAM!

Any other baseball movies in the Criterion Collection?

Sports? SPORTS!?!?!?!?!? In a movie thread!? Ugh. The only sport I care about is the Van Damme classic, Bloodsport!

I don't think there are. To be honest, I'm not the least bit interested in sports. That was my brother's thing. He was the jock, I was the nerd. Still, I enjoy a good sports movie as much as the next guy.

In fact, I was just chatting with a friend the other night about sports movies. I mentioned that a good sports movie is a good movie, and I don't have to like sports to enjoy The Natural or North Dallas Forty. Kind of like how I'm not religious, but enjoy Biblical epics like The Ten Commandments or The Greatest Story Ever Told regardless.

Unfortunately, I'd yet to fully discover Kurosawa when the AK100 DVD set was released, and it went OOP before I really thought about buying it. I used to check prices occasionally, but they were insane (just looked for the first time in a couple of years today - $899! ).
The AK100 set was such a rip-off actually. The SRP was $400, for 25 films on DVD with none of the special features carrying over (and only Madadayo did they not release previously). Compare that with the Bergman set which is $100 cheaper, and has 38 films on blu-ray with full special features...

A Kurosawa set like the Bergman one would be a godsend. There are a dozen and a half Kurosawa films that are about a decade overdue to make their (English-subtitled) blu-ray premiere, and Criterion is sitting on the rights to too many of them...

I'd love to see Johnny Got His Gun announced by Criterion (or anyone for that matter). I didn't realize that Bunuel was actually involved in the project as a writer and was also, at one point, in consideration to direct it. Who has the home video rights? Is it Metallica, since they have the film's rights (of some sort), or is it Universal?

I always thought Jason Robards was fantastic in this film.

Yeah, something weird has to be going on with Criterion and Kurosawa films. I don't think we have gotten a Kurosawa film from them since 2016 which is very odd.

JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN came out on DVD years ago from Shout Factory, I think it was. Their lease of it may have expired by now.

Yes, Dersu Uzala, Dodes'ka-den, Red Beard, Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, and Drunken Angel are all in need of Region A English-friendly formatting.

That's the release that I have. There has been a French release, but I believe there are burnt in subs.

I'll contribute to the film discussion, seeing how the last thing I want to see at the moment is any news pertaining to you know what, unless it's on the positive side. I've been going through Hong Sang-soo's filmography during this free time, at least a certain portion of it. He's completely unfamiliar to me and I decided to dive in after rewatching The Handmaiden and wanting to see more of Kim Min-hee, his latest muse. I've really been taken with the modes he operates in, which is kind of like a cross between Eric Rohmer and Woody Allen, and just a dash of Abbas Kiarostami, of all filmmakers. I started from his first with the actress, Right Now, Wrong Then, and have made it nearly to his latest. (I just subscribed to Kanopy in order to watch Grass.)

Anyone else familiar with his work? I can see why he's so taken with Kim Min-hee, outside of her unfathomable beauty. She has a real calm presence that can be modified on a dime for the serious verbal confrontations he seems to love. The Day After is my favorite thus far.

Fair enough. I assumed it was still in print during 50% events, making $200 pretty decent for a 25-film DVD set. But like I said, I've never seen a used copy at a remotely reasonable price anyway.

It definitely was available for half-off during multiple sales. I've been tempted by it a few times back then.

With Amazon's warehouses not receiving most non-essential shipments right now, I wonder if that would impact pre-orders. I have Leave Her to Heaven pre-ordered, and have waited years to finally own it on Blu-ray.

No, it won't effect pre-orders. The non-essential shipments only applies to the Fulfillment sellers and secondary sellers. This item is going to be sold by Amazon and you should have it on the day of release.

Also in lieu of a monthly speculation list...I'd like to throw out there a request for a box set of films by Frederick Wiseman. His Zipporah Films currently handles the direct sale/distribution of his films (DVD only), and I've had Titicut Follies, Welfare, etc. in the shopping cart several times, but haven't been able to pull the trigger and place the order. He's currently 90, and I hope his films ultimately don't fall into a situation similar to Russ Meyer's (rights-wise).
