Has anyone been watching TCM's Monday nights of "Moguls & Moviestars"? Each Monday they do a decade of the history of Hollywood, and after they show some of the films of that decade. Tonight's hour doc, they are showing the 20's. After, films like Sunrise and the Iron Horse. They will re-show it Wednesday, with some Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd films.

From the looks of it, the only thing that the Criterion Blu of Veronique will have that the Artificial Eye one does not have is a commentary, correct? The extras seem to be the same otherwise...same documentary on the director, interview with Irene Jacob and same 4 short films. I adore this movie but it looks like Artificial Eye pretty much nailed it with their version so I probably will not have to upgrade. I can live with no commentary anyhow.

They won't most likely do this all year, but I like the balance that they are upgrading older titles and newer titles. Hope Jules & Jim is in 2011.

Thanks for giving me more film experience than I probably deserve!

Believe it or not...I haven't seen it as of yet...I'd like to sit down and stream it in the very near future.

I tried watching 8 1/2, but became impatient with it...it's streamable as well.

You have thrown me the gauntlet of challenge Beta...I will watch Amacord by the end of the Thanksgiving weekend and will let you know what I think.

Hey...I've given Godard and Kurosawa a chance...I'll give Fellini the same respect.

Great list of releases for February. Six titles, including two catalog titles. And the streak continues with all DVD releases also coming out on Blu.

An interesting batch of releases... I wonder if Amarcord will have the matching digibook packaging, like they did with Breathless... hope so.

I don't understand the hate for the Senso cover art. People have been *****ing and moaning about the fact that Criterion don't use vintage poster art for enough of their releases - how many times did we hear that when their Red Shoes BD cover art came out? I think the Senso cover is great, and the Sweet Smell cover too. (have you seem the cover art for the Studio Canal Senso BD? Yuk!)

CG, I don't agree with you about too many "cartoon" covers. They are illustrations, some of which you might call "cartoonish" or in a comic-strip style, eg. the Fuller titles announced last month. You are lumping them all together under a single category which does not do them justice.

I like all the covers this months, with the exception of Still Walking - that looks a bit like a home-made hobbyist job, mainly I think due to the daggy font used.

That looks like Susan Sarandon on the cover of Amarcord.

You're preaching to the choir, sonny. I've watched the first two episodes so far and I've even taken the quiz online at TCM's website... and entered the sweepstakes

Ya know, since Paramount has pretty much gotten out of the catalog releases for blu-ray, (except for the obvious very very popular ones), I would hope that they'd license some to Criterion. I know they gave quite a few to Lionsgate for distribution, but just looking at the Paramount dvds I still own, there are quite a few that'd fit Criterion pretty well.

Don't Look Now (Nicholas Roeg) - 1973
Romeo and Juliet (Franco Zeffirelli) - 1968
Rosemary's Baby (Roman Polanski) - 1968
The Tenant (Roman Polanski) - 1976
Serpico (Sidney Lumet) - 1973
Murder on The Orient Express (Sidney Lumet) - 1974
The Parallax View (Alan J. Pakula) - 1974
Marathon Man (John Schlesinger) - 1976
Harold and Maude (Hal Ashby) - 1971

Heck, maybe even the original Bad News Bears. That movie deserves some special features. I doubt Paramount is in any hurry to release these, and I think most would fit Criterion very well. Paramount was one of the best studios for dark films in the late 60s early 70s.

Did everyone notice that the booklet for the The Double Life of Véronique blu-ray is being short-changed? Unfortunate.

Quote:
PLUS: A booklet featuring essays by Jonathan Romney, Slavoj Zizek, and Peter Cowie, and a selection from Kieślowski on Kieślowski (Note: Blu-ray booklet includes only Romney essay and Kieślowski on Kieślowski reprint)

Got my copy of Anti-Christ in the mail today! Decided to finally watch Bottle Rocket. Loved it! Liked it much more than Darjeeling Limited and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

I've been watching it off and on; pretty basic, annoying historians. I think I might just stick with watching the supplemental films.

I'm still picking Criterions while the B & N sale is going. So far I've ordered M, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, and AntiChrist. I also already own Benjamin Button, Paths of Glory, Seven Samurai, 8 1/2, and the Seventh Seal.

Any recommendations on another disc that you guys love?

That is still a GREAT price...and I thought my little deal was going to be the best price at this time!

I guess I did pretty well, even though I acted before this latest price drop. It was $89.05 on their website 1-2 weeks ago and I had a manager tell me that if I did it "in-store", I could get the additional 10% off AND free express shipping. When I came back this past week to do the order, she couldn't get the 10% (members discount) for me, so she took the current price at the time (it had gone up to $92.61 by that time) and was able to override the 25% coup to get the price down to $69.46 before tax...so $75.10 after taxes. That includes free express shipping, so I should either get it on the realease date or a day or so afterwards (their warehouse is close, as their store gets new shipments quickly).

Worse case...the library link would have saved me around $3.00...I guess I can't complain.
I did it this way this yesterday and got the same deal (a few dollars cheaper actually). I was going to hold off on the BBS set, but at that price, I couldn't resist. Especially with the rumors that there may not be another 50% sale.

Anyway, I'm heading to Barnes tomorrow to pick up NOTH, and I was contemplating a blind buy. Normally I would just rent first, but considering the sale, and the rather large amount of positive feedback on this release, I think I'll just pick it up. Anyone care to share some thoughts on what I should expect, and whether or not it's a good idea? Thanks in advance
Hey Juicebox!

Besides being a big Chaplin fan...I'm a novice when it comes to a LOT of the titles I see bandying back and forth on this forum. I would have never even thought about seeing "The Night of the Hunter", had I not heard stellar things about it here, so we aren't much different...looking to be educated and entertained!

I would have picked another of his films first (I'm a big fan of "The Kid")...but Modern Times is a wonderful film and is the last appearance of "The Little Tramp", so it's an important film (at least to me) as well.

It's a "silent film", but done well into the sound era and is supported by sound effects and music. It's funny, sweet, and entertaining.

As I mentioned earlier...I think it's an important film (like Breathless, Seven Samurai, Paths of Glory, etc.),

I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Thanks boys! I wish I had known about this, when this series began. What nights does it run?

Thanks!
