I don't think it sold as well as they hoped. What they should have done is release it as a large boxset which is what seems to be really popular way of releasing these type of films instead of trying to milk it over a long period of time.

It sucks too because the 4th film pretty much works its way into the 5th film. Either way, hopefully they lose the rights soon and someone gives these a proper release. Only the first one has a Blu-ray in Japan so far.

Well, if they can release a Russ Meyer film...

Which I should've mentioned in my list of "questionable" titles Criterion has released.

As a foreigner, preparing a bit for the BN sale.

It's likely Amazon will pricematch, but if they don't, I'd like to know which freight forwarder is the most reputable and cheapest?

Can't decide between Shipito and MyUS. Anyone have experience with these freight forwarders?

Amazon have not previously matched outside of big box sets, AFAIK.

They don’t match, but many individual titles do come down in price on amazon during the B&N Sale

I know you are joking, but I would actually like a well-presented copy of this film, with some good historical extras to give it context.

And besides, in another 20-30 years it will be considered so tame by comparison that it will probably be given a 'PG' rating, just like 1969's 'X' rating is today's 'R' or 'PG-13' rating. That reminds me, maybe tonight I'll watch my Criterion copy of Midnight Cowboy.

Interesting. I literally was just previewing (for the first time) the soundtrack for The Devil in Miss Jones before I decided to research Deep Throat, two seminal early 70s pornography films.

This was 2 days ago.

And now I see a post mentioning Deep Throat.

Hope you haven't been hacking my computer. Lol.

That’s a fun film. I’ve always loved old school stop-motion. There’s also Fiend Without a Face. The conclusion of that one is beyond nuts.

Amazon tends to drop the price of regular Criterions to 22.97 during the B&N sale, which is close enough for me. I live in Romania and I always ordered my US Criterions from Amazon.

However, right now they offer limited shipping options due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The cost swells to a whopping $20 shipping & handling + $20 import tax deposit, up from the usual $9 standard shipping for two Blu rays (I was never asked to pay an import tax for a small package like that, even though value-wise they should qualify). I don't know if other purchasing avenues, such as B&N + Shipito, are more feasible right now. In the past I perceived them as more complicated and potentially more expensive, so I never tried them. It may also be that Amazon's current shipping rate won't feel as prohibitive if you're going to buy a large number of titles.

Personally, I may sit this sale out if standard shipping doesn't become available. I would be better off buying at the regular Amazon price of 27.99 once it does.

Does anyone know why amazon has upped the shipping prices to 17.98USD? In detail I mean, because I can guess already ball-park.

Thanks, I also noticed the increased P&P.

I think I will go with Shipito + BN, want to try it out.

One final question: I looked at BN.com's membership option. It cost $25USD a year and you get 10% off all purchases. But they also state you get 20% off your first purchase; do they mean 20% off 1 item, or 20% off your entire order? And are these discounts (both the 10% and 20%) applicable to Criterion's during the sale?

Edit: I see the 10% off is in-store only, which isn't very useful to me. But what about the 20% off first purchase?

Amazon has variations of the following statement on its international sites: We are delivering to your region with limited shipping options. Please expect extended delivery time.

Translation of "limited shipping options" seems to be: A single shipping option utilizing Amazon's established Global Priority shipping rates - with stated delivery times of 2-4 days. I believe this is because it utilizes only courier companies and not national postal services, which have been overwhelmed during the pandemic.

Recent personal experience ordering from Amazon UK for US delivery:

[Show spoiler]I placed an order for seven titles on June 2. All were in stock. I paid the mandatory Global Priority shipping rate. The original expected delivery date set by Amazon was June 6; this later changed to July 1. The order did not ship until June 25, with a new delivery date of July 14. I complained, and Amazon refunded the shipping charges. Package was actually delivered yesterday (June 29) - via DHL. So, it did ship Priority in the end, but only after Amazon sat on the order for over three weeks. Trying to make Amazon understand that this is the issue was a challenge to say the least. I did get the "virus" excuse, but as I pointed out to Amazon, it made the decision to resume international shipping, and must therefore have been confident it could meet customer expectations - especially when it is only offering a premium shipping option.

Hopefully, things will be back to "normal" soon, with standard shipping rates.

I remember people saying that they are perfectly happy with the old-school look of DVDs. I see a lot of Ozu's work is only on the Eclipse series at Criterion which is certainly a lot cheaper because of the lack of treatment and features. Are people happy with their Eclipse series presentations?

I'm happy with the presentations on the Nikkatsu Noir sets and I can't imagine many of the silent Ozu's are going to look better than the Eclipse offerings except I was Born, but... which was an extra on Criterion's Good Morning.

They are OK, but I personally would love if some of them were made available in HD. Especially Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell, the entire Nikkatsu Noir set, and Black River.

The Eclipse Late Ozu set is on my list for the next 50% sale (whether B&N or Flash). I'm sufficiently interested in his work to not want to wait longer for upgrades, and the caps in the Beaver review of the set look alright to me.
