Good news for 4K lovers and I hope you enjoy the 4K version. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass.

Since "older films" are shot on actual film, and not derived from 2K DIs like most films from 2001-1016 or later, they are actually true 4K and better in most cases. Nothing hit or miss about any of them that I've seen so far.

Of the approximately sixty 4K movies I own, the only catalog title that's worse than the Blu-ray (shit, actually) is Batman Begins. Few are hit or miss, the majority having much more attractive colors and contrast.

I watched Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Dr. Strangelove last week, part of the Columbia Classics 4K Collection, and kept thinking how lame Criterion is being for keeping all their black and white movies in 1080p YCbCr. The wider color gamut captures much better contrast than Blu-ray's limited color space. I believe if most black and white movies looked that good, fewer people would have such an aversion to them.

Fairly sure that for most people with an aversion to B&W films, it's not on account of the limited color gamut of blu-ray

In a perfect world you get a new transfer, but most people have been waiting to just have the film.

The biggest question is do you want the movie?

You have 3 choices, buy this acceptable version for 20 bucks, buy an almost identical copy of the film that is OOP for 100 bucks, buy a BD-R Spanish disc that once shipped will be around 20 bucks.

If you want the film, the Criterion is a clear no-brainer in my mind.
Thanks for the feedback- next week I'll take that advice!

Do the technical merits of Criterion's version justify the twenty bucks?
I think the general consensus is that this is the best the film will look, seeing as the original camera negative is gone. I'd recommend getting the Criterion, though I do wish there were a few more bonus features.

I'm just saying there would be more fans if they knew how good it could look.

That's crazy. I've been discovering his soundtracks these past few weeks and started to appreciate this man more than ever lately. For a long time I assumed his soundtrack for The Thing was done by Carpenter, not Morricone. This composer is probably in my top 5 of all composers which also include Hans Zimmer, James Horner, John Williams, and Jerry Goldsmith.

RIP Ennio.

It's July 6th. Are we certain that the 10th is a go? Any more evidence to support that "insider" screenshot? Everyone got their lists together?

I'm going to go in blind. Probably buy a few films I may have missed out on buying like Hiroshima Mon Amour, Jeanne Dielman, and maybe Le Samourai. I've been waiting out on Stray Dog which has been my second, soon to be first, favorite film to not be released on Blu-ray yet (Memories of Murder is my first but it will soon be released) Still, it'll be wonderful to just walk by the aisles and immerse myself in the visually/fan-pleasing beauty of a big collection of Criterion Blu-rays layered front and behind like the flowers swaying in the German Alps. They may not be alive and singing but I've always been more of a visual person myself.

Excellent list, but I would have included Howard Shore!

Never thought about a Top 5 film composers list, but I know John Barry and Bernard Herrmann would be on it.

Dimitri Tiomkin
Miklos Rosza
Max Steiner
Bernard Herrmann
Nino Rota

I stopped by my local B&N this afternoon and confirmed that it does start on the 10th.

Good list, though I might try to fit in Korngold based if nothing else on his score for King's Row.
