I think both of them are fine. Gun to my head, I suppose I prefer the original, but I don't think there's anything wrong with the new one.

But I suspect that they felt they needed to change the cover to make it clear that it's not the same edition.

StudioCanal have been on a roll with doing more 4K-workflow restorations and I find it odd how two of Goddard's biggest/most well-known films ("Breathless" and "Pierrot le Fou") that only one of them is getting a 4K remaster ("Breathless") and the other isn't ("Pierrot le Fou").
When Army of Shadows was reissued CC used the same cover art work and same verbage as the prior release. Here CC goes out of their way to say NEW 2K with new cover artwork. Doubt it's the same old masters.

Default October's Releases Includes Parasite and an OOP Criterion Title!

Good thing Pierrot Le Fou is back in print. I've been wanting to find a good used DVD for a few months now but it's like $60 for a used one. And the Blu-ray used copy is $50. And I remember seeing someone's Reddit post, saying that they bought Pierrot Le Fou DVD for $1. That's a good deal but it feels bad when the movie gets re-released WEEKS after you bought it. This happened to me with Army of Shadows so I feel his/her pain (If they are disappointed by any chance but I don't see much of a reason why)

Parasite was not the title I really wanted to hear for this month. I think Memories of Murder should've been released first since the movie is kind of eerie and creepy in certain aspects and I think that would be great for a Halloween type month to a certain extent (It's not horror but it's a film about serial killers so that could fit). I won't be pulling the trigger on Parasite again but I hope Criterion does great in terms of sales with that one (Even though I'm sure many people have already bought it).

Overall, this month is great! Maybe a little disappointing that no horror titles are coming out but still am glad Pierrot Le Fou is going to be available soon.

Pierrot Le Fou marks the 6th Criterion Blu-ray to come back in print within the last 2-3 years I think (Films That Haven't Been In Print Includes: Chungking Express, The Confession, Le Cercle Rouge, and The Third Man.)

But we all know that Chungking Express is definitely going to come out somewhere between November and December and Le Cercle Rouge is most likely going to be re-released again with a new 4K remaster that was mentioned in the Deadline article about StudioCanal titles getting the 4K remaster treatment. (Source:https://deadline.com/2019/11/breathl...se-1202789562/)

I hope Lionsgate loses the rights to StudioCanal soon so we can get The Third Man but I don't see that anytime soon. The Confession I've been wanting to see again but since it's a recent release, I don't see it coming back in print so I might as well look for the DVD instead.

Definitely in for The Hit (finally!) and Parasite.

Interested in Claudine...

Watched The Gunfighter a month or so ago... good western but not quite buy-worthy for me.

This is the first time in a long, long time that I'm actually in for all 5 releases this month. I've been patiently waiting for an opportunity to get 'Pierrot le Fou' and 'The Hit' forever, and with 'Parasite' since I'm still "future proofing" with 4k discs, I'll happy take the commentary and black and white version at this time (Plus I have a feeling the 4K version will be rather cheap in about a year in the second-hand market).

It's a bittersweet day for me regarding the Pierrot le Fou release, as I own the OOP blu-ray from a number of years ago. That release is now devalued with the back in print film. Speaking of which, I did like the original cover more than the new one too! It was "less in your face" and more creative. Gun was replaced by a stuffed animal (maybe a sign of the times).

Claudine is the kind of pick that keeps me excited about Criterion. 22 years into the DVD/blu-ray game, I'm more excited to see them expand the canon than I am to see them double-down and upgrade the existing consensus of masters and masterpieces.

The Gunfighter art is the real tragedy here.

Pierrot is a gorgeous film and I’d love to upgrade to this new edition.

A pretty meh lineup for me, hopefully November will be massive. Clamouring for that Wong Kar-Wai set...

The Parasite release is only really worth getting for the supplements and the additional black and white cut (though I still find that cut a tad unnecessary), otherwise it's fairly pointless seeing as it is already available in a superior 4K UHD disc. Will probably cave in and get it purely for the extra features.

I wouldn't be so sure at this point. Unless they are doing two box sets in November, which would be unlike them, I have this feeling that one or both of the Fellini/WKW box sets might not make 2020...

It's a strong month of releases though, and I am happy to see Parasite in the collection as well as a great upgrade of The Hit!

Saw The Gunfighter at last year’s Il Cinema Ritrovato, and was one of my highlights- looking forward to revisiting!

Bear in mind they did the same for "Leave Her to Heaven" and "The Cranes Are Flying" and were both old masters (I don't know when the latter's was prepped but it definitely doesn't have the look of a newer scan).

I'd rather bear it in mind. No one needs to see my mind completely bared.

They did this to Le Samourai I believe also. Claiming it was a new HD remaster or something. Although I doubt it was since it looks like a more sharper version of the DVD remaster. Maybe I'm wrong because I don't know what remaster and restoration means but I'm pretty sure Criterion wasn't selling anything new other than it being a Blu-ray release. Still love the release though.

Parasite is also claiming that there's a new 4K digital restoration. Although it's most likely going to look identical to the Universal Blu-ray. I already pulled the trigger once on this release so I'm going to pass but a lot of r/Criterion fans are going to buy this one.

Pierrot Le Fou is coming out with a new 2K digital restoration so I hope it's not the same Blu-ray as last time.

Two more 20th Century Fox titles this month. I really wonder how many more they have left? I kind of hope we might see Bulworth from them.

Now thinking about it, seems like it's too good to be true to cram in the last two boxsets in the last two months. It's hard to decide which they will release first. The popular and long awaited Wong Kar-Wai boxset with Chungking Express that EVERYONE who hasn't bought it yet is in love with or the Fellini boxset for his 100th birthday.

Sounds like a betting game to me so I'm going to bet on Wong Kar-Wai for the last boxset of 2020

I agree.

For every huge film they put out, I am always so appreciative when they bring out an obscure gem, that surprises people.

Down through the years, a "Fists in the Pocket", "Canoa", or "Claudine" is very interesting, indeed.
