Yeah, aching for this one. PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET, THIEVES' HIGHWAY, and The Carl Th. Dreyer boxset. And yes, I know I can pick up some of these from overseas.

The Milos Foreman films with a release of BLACK PETER would be solid too.

I've been holding out on an upgrade for "Written on the Wind" for sometime now, and for the past few B&N sales I've been tempted to just by the DVD and be over with it, but since it's a Criterion release my OCD just won't allow a DVD in that collection...

I was looking at this disc the other day too. I can see this one getting an upgrade down the line, I'd hold off.

My Written on the Wind DVD is sitting awkwardly between several blu rays. The same issue with That Hamilton Woman. Would love those two to finally get their due on blu ray.

Yeah, I literally had it sitting in my B&N cart for two of my three orders this past weekend and both times I deleted it at the last minute. It's Douglas Sirk & Rock Hudson and they've already upgraded "Magnificent Obsession" and "All that Heaven Allows" in the last couple of years... so I agree I think it's just a matter of time.

This is the EXACT OCD reason I can't bring myself to purchase it (well that at the SD presentation of a movie I know would be fantastic in HD). I have a few Criterion DVDs that are OOP (Armageddon, The Rock, Chasing Amy) but I end up keeping with with my general collection and not the "Criterion Area".

I think it's great they released the Bruce Lee set. I think this could bring a lot of new movie watchers to their label, and since 30 for 30 water just came out, this box set they just released could bring them a lot more revenue then they used to which leads to them putting out more films.

I'm totally shocked about the sheer volume of Kurosawa that isn't on blu-ray yet. Just his popularity makes this massively surprising to me. Bad Sleep Well! Drunken Angel! Red Beard! Stray Dog!

At this point, an AK box set upgrade wouldn't even feel like a cash grab repackage because of how many would be on blu-ray for the first time.

I think your mistaken, I’ve seen several interviews where Bong clearly mentions the BW version as kind of a vanity project, in his usual self deprecating attitude. To paraphrase what I remember him saying in an interview: I always grew up watching all these classics like Psycho and Seven Samurai in BW, and secretly always hoped one day I could make such classics. But then I thought well probably I don’t probably have it in me to make such classic timeless masterworks, but can just make BW versions and pretend that they are classics to make myself feel better.

He even went on to describe the colour timing challenges in the transition to BW as some of the original details like in the shot of water flowing down through the son’s feet, of which Bong mentioned that the water flowing wasn’t quite visible anymore in BW after a straight conversion, as the scene was lit and shot with a specific colour palette in mind. So it’s pretty odd to me after these comments from him that the film was shot with BW in mind. I wish I could share the exact video link where he brought these up, but I don’t remember in which of many videos he had promoting the film that he had these comments, maybe some other member may recall?

He's not claiming that the movie was originally intended for B&W. He's just saying that some of the critics liked the B&W version so much that they felt it could have been the original intent.

It that is the case, I see the point. But just want to put it out there anyway in case anyone does misread that as the BW being the original intent, which isn’t the case.

I suppose it depends on one's perspective. Looking at the 2020 releases (SKUs, not indiviual movies), about 22.5% of them were upgrades. So, effectively, it's one title per month that's an upgrade, and four that are new.

I'm a bit let down that we didn't get new horror title announcements for October. Onibaba needs a Blu-Ray release so badly.

I'd be happy with an upgrade of Jigoku.

Is there a list of all the blu-rays that had this issue?

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare2/oniababa.htm

You can wait for the criterion and spend 2-3 times as much, and chances are, it will be inferior to what seems to be an excellent release.

I bought my copy a few weeks ago and will be watching it one of these days. Some of Eureka's titles have recently been discontinued, including some of their MoC Japanese releases. Not sure if Onibaba will be discontinued as well, but better be safe than sorry .

B&N online sales has never been a polished operation, as many can attest to. Add in the fact that you are in Canada, and the impact of COVID, and it is no surprise at all. If it's any consolation, Amazon UK is currently sitting on orders that would normally dispatch almost immediately to the US; one I placed in June was shipped three weeks later, and one I placed July 9th has still not been dispatched. At least Amazon doesn't process payments until shipping. Hopefully, your order will be with you soon.

Yeah, it's long overdue. Criterion has been lacking with Japanese films for the last few years.

We they started with their DVD line, there was a Japanese release almost every month.
