Goodness, there's really no getting through to you, huh? "Blown out" denotes the issue of clipped/crushed whites - essentially crush at the opposite end of the spectrum from black, where the lighter gradations approaching white just get swallowed up in a puddle of Christ's radiant titty milk. It's as visually obvious an issue as the black crush plaguing these Sony titles, and regardless of how you feel about it or its dark companion, Polish Fury isn't affected by it. Thanks for playing, though.

Haha! I love that the person who did the caps called the BD the "Black Crush Edition", maybe Sony can just make that the new designation for this continuing series of botched releases

That comparison does an excellent job of showing how the issue isn't so much that the Sony BD is "too dark" as that the blacks are distorted unnaturally.

I have to agree. Vargo's Fury cap from Sony's own video clip still has deep blacks but the lower gamma means you can pick out so much more detail around him, instead of his head looking like it's floating in black.

Newsflash, Opinions are subjective. Facts are objective.

The Blacks ARE crushed. You can achieve literally the same effect within a software player (Via shaders or by setting the greyscale wrong) or even the incorrect settings on a hardware player.

So if they released a corrected disc. You could still get that kind of picture if you wanted with essentially any BD. All you have to do is either set the incorrect color format or range. Or that + setting the TV's black levels to low instead of normal.

Here's another using the TW BD that clips it to 16-235

I'm not arguing about black crush, I dropped that because I don't want to argue. I don't come to this forum to argue, or any forum, or onto the internet period. I hate arguing. I have a simple opinion that when I viewed the Fury BD it looked awesome and in the caps it looks better than the Polish BD. That's my subjective opinion, no matter what the tech issues might be. My opinion is my own, it can't be wrong or debated.

Considering every professional reviewer and their mother gave it a 5 star review I don't feel like an idiot for saying this. You and the others can scream at me until the cows come home, it really doesn't matter.

Now The Interview caps, those look like shit.

This wouldn't be the first time that reviewers get something wrong. You have no idea how many times I've submitted corrections to publications like The New York Times, Time, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, etc.

The Sony clips are a big improvement on the Sony Blu-Ray. Are they pretty close to the Polish Blu-ray?

yes they are, Polish Blu-Ray uses the same master as used in the Sony Clips (you can recognise it on the Skin tones - they look way more natural and not as red as on the US BluRay)

Plenty of absolutely terrible transfers have received top marks over the years. It's the exact same thing here. Reviewers either don't know their asses from their noses or they have terrible equipment set to "flashy retail store mode". Either way, you get tons of terribly misinformed opinions on Blu-ray video quality.

Unfortunately I know first-hand of some Bluray releases which have had their quality 'dialed down' deliberately. Primarily just to keep something in the bag for future formats.

However it wasn't in connection with Sony and I doubt they would do something so blatant. This issue is just incompetence and lack of oversight in my opinion.

I'm just glad to see:

A) So many examples coming in from all over the world of how flawed these Sony BDs are

B) More and more people recognizing this

Anyone who wants to can certainly voice the opinion that they find these black crushed Sony BDs visually pleasing. That's their opinion, and it's true, they can't be wrong about what they enjoy looking at.

However, if anyone is suggesting that these discs reflect the way these films were intended to look by the filmmakers, they can clearly be proven wrong, and I suspect very soon will be.

Sony is guilty of it too

Everyone should realize there is little chance Sony corrects these issues on already released BDs. Unless a director or producer of the film steps in and confronts the studio, this is probably it for the discs listed in this thread.

What we can hope is that all Blu-ray transfers going forward don't have the problem.

Not at all. Having two images side by side to make "comparisons" shows flaws way more than viewing a title alone. In fact, without such comparisons, most of the flaws people find would go unnoticed.

It's not up to reviewers to know exactly how every film looked in theaters, just like studios don't know the exact color timing of a film from 40 years ago. I watched Fury and didn't notice to be super dark on my system, either.

Has anyone found comparisons to other region blus of big Sony films that were thought to be too dark, like Amazing Spider-Man?

The issue is not "too dark" or "too bright". Black crush can be applied even to scenes that take place in broad daylight.
