P.S. I just watched the screener BD disc (production copy) for Seven Years in Tibet.

I'm still recovering.

One of the most 3-dimensional, naturally-detailed high-definition images I HAVE EVER SEEN. That that PCM soundtrack... sigh...

Expect a glowing review at www.dvdfile.com on Friday!
David,

I'm glad you liked the title. I wish every master looked like this one.

The bit depth question is a tough one. I think we will transistion over time to using 20 or 24bit DD THD and eventually we will drop LPCM. 24bit LPCM cuts in to our video bandwidth more than we like, but this is of course, subjective.

PG, as long as you don't apply dialog-normalization to your TrueHD, I'm all for it... 20 and 24 bits!

If consumer hardware allowed us to bypass the digital-volume-recalculation I wouldn't care about DN, but right now DN means you can't get bit-for-bit accuracy from a TrueHD track that's got the flag set. Thanks for avoiding it with your companies encodes.

My review for 7 years:

It's great that SPHE is looking into higher resolutions and compressed lossless is definitely a great option of doing that, but, imo, there should still at least be a 16-bit LPCM track for compatability's sake.

Can any insiders give us any insight into what Studio Canal is doing or planning? It doesn't seem like they have made their position clear to me and I'm wondering if they are going to be releasing movies on Blu-ray discs anytime soon.

Thanks,
Darin

It seems that Gaumont has ties to Sony and Studio Canal and have released at least one movie on BD so far. Not sure if that means anything for the greater collection of Studio Canal movies though.

Paidgeek:

Is Sony aware of some reported (and seemingly isolated) problems where spots have developed on the blu ray discs for a couple of titles released earlier this year, and has the cause been determined?

This film has a very high quality master. It will be in stores in just a few months.

I'd have to say this is my new favorite #1 BD. (Believe it or not, I have never seen this film before yesterday.)

You are absolutely right in your hints about how pleased we would be with it on Blu-ray. The photography, setting and scenic vistas in this movie remind me somewhat of Lawrence of Arabia.

If you are familiar with the HD master of LOA, can you comment on how good it looks in comparison to Seven Years in Tibet and what quality level we can expect on the BD?

If it's even close, I'm drooling already! Can't wait for it!
These titles are shot differently so the masters are not easy to directly compare. The technical properties of LOA are good to very good, but when you watch it in HD, what really grabs you is just how hard a movie it must have been to make. You can appreciate it in SD of course, but in SD you would be hard pressed to know if you were looking at matte paintings instead of incredible scenery.

My question would be to Paidgeek, probably (since he's been answering Fox/BD+ questions): Can anything for the USA be taken away from Fox's recent release announcements in Japan? Are they using BD+ on the Japanese releases? Japan is also Region A, so those BDs would play on US players, so has Fox "USA" just being lazy and not announcing yet?
Sorry I just don't know what they are doing in Japan with BD+. I do know they are working very hard to get domestic releases completed.

This is a tough issue for us. No matter what we do, someone will not be entirely happy with the outcome. I think we will need to adapt according to the equipment that consumers are using for decoding.

There are some very positive rumors on this topic. I only hope they take much better care than they have with their HD-DVD releases..

I have asked the disc plant if they can verify if these claims might be real or not. I don't have a sample of this despite our having lots of discs pass through our place.

I think the majority of us will be happiest with a higher bit depth like 24/48 and TrueHD than a 16 bit PCM track.
It seems that almost all standalones are now capable of TrueHD.

I hope Spidey 3 will have TrueHD 24/96, perhaps 6.1?

From my identical post on the AVS forum today:

I did some checking on this issue and found out that this is an isolated case with a limited number of discs affected from 1 title. Apparently there was some sort of impurity that was mixed in with a batch of material used for this production run and it was simple a fluke. You Blu-ray library is safe.

Paidgeek,

Congrats on Casino Royale being voted the best Blu-ray disc of the first year. This was voted upon by both forum members and staff as the best disc.
