Not how it works. Even if the top 10 weren't protected, you don't get the 8th spot. You get a compensation pick after the first round and before the second. The "8th pick" would just disappear.

The Pirates have reportedly agreed to a 3-year, $39 million deal with Francisco Liriano. I'm kind of surprised he didn't wait until after Lester signs as he could have been the backup plan for some of the teams that fail to get Lester.

Here are some of the anecdotes from SI's Sportsman of the Year article on Madison Bumgarner. I'm having a hard time determining whether this guy is man or myth. If this stuff is all true he really is The Most Interesting Man in the World.

He hacked up a rattlesnake, saving two baby rabbits, nursed them back to health and raised them as his own.

Bumgarner and his wife were roping cattle when Madison was startled by a large snake he figured was a rattler. He quickly grabbed an ax and hacked it to pieces. When Ali, an expert field dresser, examined what was left of the snake, she found two baby jackrabbits inside pieces of it and extracted them. A short while later the Bumgarners noticed that one of the rabbits had moved slightly. It was alive. Ali brought the rabbit back to their apartment and for the next few days kept it warm and bottle-nursed it. The rabbit soon was healthy enough for them to release into the wild.

It's all true. As a Cubs fan I'm happy but $155 million is a lot for an almost 31-year-old with 1,600 innings pitched. The Cubs aren't going to be contenders in 2015 and the free agent pitching class after next season is loaded so I kind of wish they'd waited. On the other hand, Lester is an experienced veteran and could help Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks develop.

Dodgers have been incredibly busy over the last day. In addition to the Rollins deal they made the following moves:

Matt Kemp and catcher Tim Federowicz (plus $31 million) to the Padres for catcher Yasmani Grandal, pitcher Joe Wieland and righty Zach Eflin

The Dodgers acquired All-Star second baseman Howie Kendrick from the Angels for young left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney, a player they had acquired hours earlier Wednesday from the Marlins. The Dodgers also got infielder Enrique Hernandez, reliever Chris Hatcher and minor leaguer Austin Barnes from Miami.

The Marlins received Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon, pitcher Dan Haren and infielder Miguel Rojas. Dan Haren may retire rather than leave Southern California.

The Dodgers also agreed to a 4-year, $48 million deal with pitcher Brandon McCarthy.

Tigers traded for Cespedes

As first reported by MLB Network analyst and former Tiger C.J. Nitkowski, the Tigers are expected to announce they have traded right-hander Rick Porcello to Boston for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Right-hander Alex Wilson is also coming to Tigers with Cespedes. Wilson had a 1.91 ERA ,0.882 WHIP in 18 games with the Red Sox last season. The Tigers could get one more player in return.

Active Day for Detroit

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Tigers have acquired Alfredo Simon from the Reds.

So there's your Rick Porcello replacement. Simon posted a nice-looking 3.44 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 196 1/3 innings this past season for the Reds, but he faded badly as the year went along and his peripheral numbers have never been very kind. The 33-year-old right-hander can become a free agent after the 2015 campaign. It's not yet known what Cincinnati will get in return.

I recall winning a WS something your team has yet to accomplish .

The Tanaka contract seems ok for now. He's really young, so he could put up serious numbers. Although there is a chance that he has to get TJ, and that would make the contract lol

Tanaka at 150 over 7 is fine as hes like 24 years old im talking 200 million to a 31 year old pitcher that's bad
