That's not desperation when they still have a very deep and good farm system. Desperation would be if they traded away some of their major league players in the deal as well. The Yankees wanted Schwarber in this deal and they didn't get him.

You're assuming this is a 3 month rental but this gives the Cubs an exclusive negotiating window to sign Chapman to an extension and if it does end up just being a rental the Cubs will still get a 1st round pick since they'll make Chapman a qualifying offer.

Torres is a good prospect, but he's at least a couple years from being ready for the majors and plays a position the Cubs should be set at for years. McKinney was a big prospect a few years back but he's regressed and done poorly this year in AA. Adam Warren is a mediocre reliever at best and at 28 doesn't have much upside. As a player entering his second year of arbitration next year it's very possible the Cubs would have ended up releasing him after the season rather than pay him a salary that will likely end up in the $3 million range. Crawford isn't one of the Cubs top 30 prospects so while he could end up panning out the likelihood is he'll never make the majors.

1. Chapman isn't eligible for a qualifying offer. Player has to play an entire season with a team to receive a qualifying offer.

2. He'd be silly to extend his contract. It's possible but very unlikely. Hes got a big paycheck coming his way.

3. Adam Warren is not a mediocre pitcher. If you're a cubs fan and don't pay attention to career stats your lack of research might agree but he pitched well in NY and I'm sure he's happy to be back.

4. Regressing or nah, 21 years old is young af and as a former first rounder that's a good piece for a 3 month rental .

Warren is currently a very mediocre pitcher. He's been up and down between the minors and majors this year. McKinney has not been very good this year. That doesn't mean he can't get back to what he once was. Torres is really the piece that is going to make this trade for the Yankees. The bottom line is you stated this is a desperation move by the Cubs which is incorrect. The Cubs have the best record in baseball and have the largest lead of any division leader. They didn't have to give up any major league talent to get one of the best closers in the game and have a deep and good minor league system even after this trade that they could afford to make this trade. They have young players that were on the major league roster or currently on it: Almora, Contreras, and Baez that don't play every day currently. The Yankees wanted Schwarber for either Miller or Chapman and didn't get him. None of that is desperation.

Andre Miller has been traded to the Indians for a few top prospects. Beltran will likely be next. Looks like we're officially throwing the towel on 2016. We're really stocking up the farm pretty well overall so far.

Good! I love Andrew Miller. He loves being a Yank but let him go win a ring in Cleveland (2 championships in one year?).

Not sure how good these prospects are though. Frazier's only batting around 260 between Double A and Triple A and Sheffield is still at High-A. I heard the Nationals would agree to trade Giolito for Miller. Idk if that source was overblown or nah.

If we trade for Beltran I hope we can see a MLB ready return. It really doesn't matter at this point. Just gotta get something for a soon to be free agent that's got a fantastic bat right now.

Yanks should have gotten more. Betances is going to really be affected by the trades of Chapman, and now Miller. He was alrrsdy pretty shaken by just the Chapman trade, and now all of a sudden he's their closer. That 7/8/9 inning dynamic was the best in baseball, and now it's completely demolished. I don't even think the Yanks were out of it, they had beeen doing better, and just needed an immediste impact offensive player, not prospects. And the prospects sound pretty mediocre to be honest. Ah well

I've now heard Brian McCann's name attached to the Atlanta Braves (Braves opening a new stadium next year and have the hometown kid comeback would make sense). A Beltran trade is due anytime IMO. Cashman might as well put "a everything must go" sign outside of Yankee stadium.

McCann and Beltran are both in the lineup today. Have to see if they get pulled during the game in case they get dealt. My guess is McCann is gonna stay put because he can veto any trade.

It doesn't have to be today. The deadline is tomorrow at 4pm (with 7/31 landing on a Sunday). But I'm sure you knew that.

I am aware of that. They don't play till 7 tomorrow so any indications of a trade after today's game just gonna be hearsay until it's a deal. If they dealt for Miller this morning they almost guaranteed to make another play today.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure another deal (or three) will be done today. Cashman did end his phone conference today with "stay tuned". So I'm guessing something will be imminent today.

Word is that Yankees would need to cover half of McCann's salary, and they would likely want a top pitching prospect. Not sure the Braves will unload someone from their stockpile for McCann, especially with Weiters and Ramos on the market this off season.

Beltran has been traded:

The New York Yankees have agreed to a trade that will send outfielder Carlos Beltran to the Texas Rangers for right-handed pitching prospect Dillon Tate and others, according to multiple reports and confirmed by ESPN.

Beltran, 39, is batting .304 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs this season for the Yankees. He is in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract and will be a free agent after this season.

T[B]ate, 22, was the Rangers' first-round pick in the 2015 draft. The right-hander is 3-3 with a 5.12 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) at Hickory, Texas, the Rangers' Class A team in the South Atlantic League.

In addition to Tate, the Yankees will also receive minor league right-handed pitchers Eric Swanson and Nick Green from the Rangers, according to YES Network.
