Yeah, I think that one was more or less debunked. Although, I suppose that story was at least partially derived from the known fact that Rickey was notoriously bad at remembering people, even his own teammates.

Just a unique character in that he often came off sounding like a self-centered a-hole with a lot of his antics, but I don't think Rickey ever meant to come off that way, nor was he even self aware enough to realize it. Like, I can't recall anyone ever accusing him of being intentionally mean spirited - just a little clueless and in his own world at times. And it seemed like both his teammates and opponents who knew him largely liked him and even came to appreciate his unique personality. It's a weird situation where a lot of MLB fans have a negative impression of Rickey Henderson, but seemingly very few players do.

Oh, and one more Rickey gem. I think this one was confirmed to be an actual quote too. I believe Canseco did say that Rickey never used steroids, and frankly, I don't see how he possibly could have. Can't recall his body type ever deviating even a little from his very slender 180'ish lb frame throughout his career.

Quote:
A reporter asked Rickey Henderson if Ken Caminiti’s estimate that 50% of Major League players were taking steroids was accurate. His response was,
“Well, Rickey’s not one of them, so that’s 49 percent right there.”

Interesting, but risky move by Gleyber Torres to only seek out a one-year deal. He was one of my favorite Yankee players, partly because he's just a really nice guy and a nice team player. Hitting-wise he can be incredible streaky, but he has the potential to carry a team when he's hot. I hope the gamble works out for him.

I’ll miss him but many had a love/hate relationship with the guy. He was frustrating to watch at times. I agree that one-year contract is risky af. Would not be surprised if he ends up DFA’d or in the minors.

LMFAO DFA he is the Tigers starting second baseman! We will not DFA him, Look at the fact there still gonna start Javier Baez this season due to his contract.

I was talking after the season. Gleyber deserved a beefier contract which is why I’m concerned.

I wonder how they can enforce this, what is there to stop them from entering even Yankee stadium again? No ID is needed to purchase or use tickets, not sure how they could ever identify them trying to enter and stop them.. Only plausible way is if they have facial identification technology at every stadium.

I hear ya but surprisingly Yankee Stadium does implement facial recognition technology. Not sure if all stadiums within MLB use it though.

Interesting article on the topic.

Retinal scanning, but I can see this being a thing in the next 10 years or so.

It is to a point that I think the league needs to step in here and fix this issue or at least make an attempt.

The deferred money thing is one thing I think that would be fair to eliminate without essentially just not letting the Dodgers sign anyone, because it is becoming a joke at this point imo.

I think at the very least here, the deferred contracts should no longer be allowed here and that full 70 million needs to count against the Dodgers cap & luxury tax threshold, not the 46 it is right now. The fact they are allowed to game the cap to begin with and then game the luxury tax with only 46 million of it counting for some dumb reason! Can we at least end this process of stashing money away to help the team skirt cap structures and tax penalties!

This sport would be light years better with an NFL style hard cap imo, none of this nonsense of deferred contracts or paying a tax penalties to get around a hard cap! I would much rather see teams like the Dodgers forced to not only pay the full amount of their contracts, but no more going over the cap and paying a tax bill. No, it will be trading or cutting players to get under that number!

League wont do anything. The downfall of MLB was the strikes in the 90's. The moment the cap went away it all got out of hand.

MLB needs to do what NHL and NFL have done and institute the large cap across the board with leaguewide revenue sharing. Then a minimum total team salary for all teams across the board.

Start with the soft cap of 80-90m and the max for a team at 150-160m for all teams. This would make it fair for every team in the league and these stupid salares and deferments would be gone.
