First Jay Mariotti now Rios, I'm really starting to like Ozzie!
LOL I'm loving it. JP looks like a genius all of a sudden(ok yeah he signed Rios as well but he was an All-Star at the time and had a few great seasons)!

JP didn't do anything, he likely placed his entire roster on waivers with a few exceptions (as most teams do) and was shocked when someone actually claimed Rios. I wonder if he even tried to get any compensation for Rios or just told them immediately they could take him.

haha yep shock was the word.

I still can't believe what happened but glad it did.

And it was a straight player dump... nothing in return from the Sox.

Jesus... i'm a huge baseball fan... and stuff like this really bothers me.

The league overall is not healthy.

Pirates, Royals and a few other teams are totally up crap creek... like forever!

Before the damn strike and Commish Bud, there seemed to be a more even playing field for all teams?!?! Pirates were right up there up until 1992!

I don't think it is as bad as it used to be. The teams out West have rotated in success in the past 5-10 years. The Rays, Rangers, Marlins, Mariners have homegrown talent that has had some success. It just seems to be the same teams like you mentioned the Pirates, Royals, Reds, etc that seem to be in the same cycle. That to me is more of a management problem in not getting and retaining talent. Especially with the Pirates they trade away their players without even trying to compete.

Cubs pulled it out in the 9th, but it shouldn't matter. If I'm the Cardinals I'd rather win and clinch than clinch on an off day anyway. I'm sure the Cardinals thought they were about to clinch when the Cubs had 2 outs but Jeff Baker had a 2 run shot to win. Huge loss for the Giants wild card chances. Lincecum is pitching for the Giansts today so the Cardinals will likely clinch whether they win or lose.

Derrek Lee might miss today's game after experiencing neck pain after he was slapped in the side of his helmet by Angel Guzman after Lee scored the tying run in the 9th. This is the kind of things us Cubs fans have experienced this year. On the positive sign, the Cubs still owe Milton Bradley $20 million for the next 2 seasons, $90 million to Soriano over the next 5 seasons, $73 million to Zambrono over the next 4 seasons, and $26.5 million to Fukudome over the next 2 seasons. At least Kevin Gregg was only signed to a one-year contract, so he can go blow saves somewhere else next year.

Yep! Good read.

I personal love the Roger's Centre... mind you i'm not down there playing on it, but I thought the field turf was a huge improvement over the carpet it did have... which many stadiums had not so long ago... even Philly!

The field turf feels pretty soft on the feet from the couple of times I was on it during tours of the building.

Really though... there is no reason the Jays can't compete on 80 million payroll and then build it up as the wins and fans mount up again.

I'm excited for a change. Even if it means sucking for a couple more years. As long as there is a plan that doesn't involve signing washed up players like Frank Thomas to crazy amounts of money i'm game!

Too many bad deicisions in the past 8-16 years have caused this problem in Toronto. Not the fans.

Yankees looking good so far, up 4-0, with bases loaded in the 3rd.

Lester just took a line drive off his knee, instantly collapsed to the ground, and had to be helped off the field.

I can't imagine how badly that must've hurt.

Yankees commentators (Michael Kay and Al Leiter) are chatting about what they think should be done about the playoffs, because they both don't think there is any incentive for a wild card team to try to win their division, and they are at no real disadvantage for being the wild card team.

The reason it got brought up is because Francona apparently said something about how this series is important, but he cares more about just keeping everyone healthy going into the playoffs. So he's basically conceding the division, instead of over-exerting his players.

The result is that this series is somewhat meaningless, whereas if Boston felt like they needed to win the division, this series would be huge.

~~~~
Al Leiter's idea... add 2 more wild cards in each league, making 12 playoff teams.
Call these teams East, Central, West, WC1, WC2, WC3 (and repeat for each league).
First round, best of 3. WC1 and WC2 play each oher. WC3 plays division winner with worst record (assume Central). East and West get a bye.
Second round, winners from first round move on, and playoffs continue as usual, EXCEPT this round is best of 7.
Third round, LCS.
Fourth round, WS.
Michael Kay thinks that's ridiculous, because "it turns baseball into hockey, or football, or basketball, where half the league makes the playoffs". That might be fine in other sports, but baseball has such a long season that it seems like it'd be pointless to make teams play so many games, just to end up letting tons into the playoffs.
~~~~

Michael Kay's idea (keeping in mind he doesn't like the idea of a wild card in the first place)... add 1 more wild card from each league.

The only change between his idea and what is currently in place is that the two wild card teams would play in a best-of-3 series starting the day after the regular season ends.

From there, it will be like the current playoffs. The wild card winner would play the team with the best record in the league, and the remaining two division winners would match up.

The reason I think this is a great idea is that it makes the wild card something that's not essentially a free ticket into the playoffs. You get into the playoffs, sure, but at a huge cost.

You'd probably have to blow your two best pitchers in the 3-game series, to make sure you win that.

Then, without any days off, you move right into a 7 game series against the top team in your league.

It's not impossible for a wild card team to win the World Series, but if they do, they certainly earned it. That way winning the division should be the goal, and no team will feel satisfied to just accept the wild card, but will gladly take if it's all they can get.

I like the idea of expanding the playoffs and shrinking the regular season... 3 WC 1 - 3 would be great! But likely never happen

From somone who isn't a fan of the Redsox or Yankees... the idea of seeing the Yanks/RedSox or Redsox/Angels again and again... etc... is getting BORING!!!!!

I may or may not have to find the Tigers/Twins games somewhere this week at this rate! This race is ALMOST making baseball interesting this week.

EDIT: Then the Tigers go and score 11 unanswered on the White Sox. Somehow I bet Rios is to blame.
