If he goes to the Yanks, can we say the 28th World Series stays home in NYC ?

I think Halladay is going to want a new contract in order to waive his no-trade clause and there is no way the Rays are going to pay him as much as the Yankees or Red Sox. Maybe they are trying to raise the price the Yanks or Sox have to pay.

In Cubs news, Ryne Sandberg is going to manage the Iowa Cubs this season. Sandberg managed the Cubs single A team in 2007 and 2008 and double A team in 2009, and the Iowa Cubs are the triple A team. It is assumed he will become the Cubs manager once Lou Piniella leaves, although it is possible he could join the Cubs in 2011 as bench coach if Piniella is still with the team.

I heard about the secret 3-way talks (between the D-backs, Yankees, and Tigers) last night, and it's kind of a toss up.

The Yankees would get Granderson, and some future prospects from the D-backs, but would have to give up Ian Kennedy, Phil Coke, Austin Jackson, and some pitching prospect.

It'd be tough to see Jackson go, because I was looking forward to seeing his potential as a future career-long Yankee who came up through the system (like Jeter, Posada, Rivera, whoever). It's possible he could end up being a bust, in which case being able to bring in Granderson would be great. But who knows.

According to Buster Olney (of ESPN), the Granderson deal looks like it's going to happen. He describes it as being "on the 1 yard-line", that the Yankees are really interested, and will make the deal by the end of the day.

So is this good for the Yanks ? I don't know the guy!

Will they still try to get Halladay ?

Yeah, I dont think it changes anything about Halladay, so if they were interested before, they still would be.

The main effects of the Granderson trade would be the loss of Austin Jackson, and they could give up on going after Damon. Rumors were they were going to offer him a 2-year $20 million deal, but if they get Granderson, they won't need Damon anymore.

I suppose there's always a small chance the Yankees are faking their interest in Granderson still, to try to get Damon to accept a lower offer. But with how serious the talks have gotten, I don't think it's appropriate to mislead other teams, so I imagine the Yankees interest in Granderson is genuine.

So between Cabrera, Damon and Matsui, who will the Yanks lose ?

I'd keep Damon and Matsui if they could!

There are conflicting reports, but according to the NY Times, the trade has been made.

Yankees get Curtis Granderson, and give up Ian Kennedy to the D-backs, and Phil Coke & Austin Jackson to the Tigers.

D-backs send Max Scherzer to the Tigers, and the Tigers send Edwin Jackson to the D-backs.

Unrelated, Peter Gammons is leaving ESPN after the MLB winter meetings are over. He says he wants to seek out new challenges, and a less demanding schedule. I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up on the MLB network.

Someone wiseguy already changed Granderson's Wikipedia page, listing him as the CF for the Yankees.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Granderson

Since Girardi already said he's changing his jersey from #27 to #28, it seems like Granderson will have to pick a new number.

Next move is probably re-sign Pettitte.

They don't really need Damon anymore, unless they plan on getting rid of Melky. Granderson will play CF, Melky will move to LF.

If it comes down to signing Damon or Matsui, I'd probably sign Matsui, for his bat, and use him as strictly a DH again. I think Matsui had the 2nd highest RBI:AB ratio in the AL (or maybe MLB).

They don't need Cameron. They don't really need Halladay (they did fine this year without him, didn't they?), but that doesn't mean they won't take a shot at getting him.

As crazy as it sounds, the Yankees said they want to shave their payroll down to $185m for the 2010 season (it was $208m for 2009).

So far for 2010, the big 4 salaries (Jeter, A-Rod, CC, and Teix) will cost the Yankees about $100 million. Posada, Mo and AJ add another $45.

So if the Yankees really want to spend only $185 million, that leaves $40 million for the remaining 18 roster spots, or just over $2 million per player.

Add in Pettite, and that's about $1.75 million per player, for the remaining 17.

If they brought on Halladay at $20 million a year, that'd leave about $10 million for the remaining roster, or $600k per player.

Considering Cano made $6 million last year, and arbitration will likely give him a raise, it seems the Yankees can either sign Halladay or shave their payroll, but not both.

I know for Halladay but id still get him!

The Yanks would probably be unstoppable!

Johnny Damon is quite good in the outfield!

Are we watching the same Johnny Damon? He's a good hitter, but an average-at-best outfielder. An corner OF'er is only as good as his arm, and Damon's is crappy. His legs are also too old for him to play CF anymore, which is why they moved him to left.

Well, Matsui doesn't have the arms he used too!

I'd guess Matsui has a better arm than Damon, but he has crappy knees. With Granderson the Yankees don't really need any more outfielders. So if it comes down to Damon's bat vs. Matsui's, it's tough, but I'd probably go with Matsui.

Who knows how Damon would respond to becoming a full-time DH, but Matsui seemed to handle it well.

Some players lose their focus when they sit around in a dugout waiting to bat, rather than getting to play in the field.

Giambi, for example, hit much better when he played first-base, than when he was DH'ing.

I dunno about that I think a healthy and strong Boston rotation beats out the yankees now.

But Halladay puts the yankees in clear first as best staff in baseball. Right now I'd say one of the top but they are still thin in the middle and depth wise(look at Wang) Halladay would lock that up especially if they got Pettitte back. God it would be terrible

CC
Halladay
AJ
Pettitte

Then that 5 spot is a no pressure situation and guys won't feel like they need to help carry the team.

True, although Wang is a free agent. I don't think they need someone as good as Halladay to be great. Even a guy like Lackey, who is good, but not on Halladay's level of good, would make the Yankees rotation tough to beat.

The only problem is I heard Lackey has insane demands.
