Mariners signed "King" Felix Hernandez to a 5 year, $80 million extension. Hernandez was eligible for arbitration this year and would have been a free agent following the 2011 season. If Hernandez had waited to become a free agent and stayed healthy and productive he probably could have gotten at least a $200 million contract, but he apparently likes it in Seattle and will still only be 28 when this deal expires.

Felix cost himself a lot of money if he stays healthy. Almost no pitcher at his level had ever become a free agent so young. On the open market he very well could have gotten a better contract than Sabathia got from the Yankees. A great signing by the Mariners.

I think Felix was just playing it safe. If he would get hurt he would never get a huge contract so he took the long-term security over the risk of injury. He'll only be 28 when this contract expires, which is the same age as CC was when he got his huge contract, so he still has the chance for another big contract.

He's smart to get this much money at such a young age. $16m per year is a lot of money for a pitcher and as someone has mentioned, he'll be only 28 when he's up for another contract. If he can stay healthy, he'll will get a monster deal.

I would not turn down the deal, but I would play MLB for the minimum salary if I could. He very easily could have gotten a deal over $200 million if he had stayed healthy two more years.

Why risk it? 80 million is more than enough money for anyone. As a pitcher, your career hangs by a thread...any serious arm/shoulder issue and you're done.

And for someone who throws so hard, it's just way too risky

He's just saying this so it seems like he isn't desperate for a deal. He's this year's Bobby Abreu, who expected a huge payday last year but ended up having to take a huge paycut. I'd guess Damon will return to New York on a one year contract for around $5 million. Boras really screwed up when he was asking for a 3-4 year deal. He probably could have gotten Damon a decent two year deal from the Yankees at the start of free agency but that won't happen now.

I think Matsui is this year's Bobby Abreu**, but agree that Damon is similar. I think you're right that the Yankees would've given him 2 years, if he came to them first, and had more realistic expectations. He rejected the Yankees by testing the market, and nobody picked him up, so now his options seem to be to come begging back to the Yankees, play for peanuts for another team, or retire.

**
[Show spoiler]Matsui was making $13 million with the Yankees. Signed a 1-year deal with the Angels for $6.5 million.

Abreu was making $16 million with the Yankees. Signed a 1-year deal with the Angels for $5.

The thing is Matsui realized pretty quick that he wasn't going to get a long-term deal and took the one year deal. Abreu thought he could get a large, 3-year contract and turned down a 2-year, $16 million contract from the Rays. By the time he realized he wasn't getting a long-term deal the Rays weren't interested so he had to take the one-year, $5 million offer from the Angels in mid-February. This is similar to Damon in that he could have signed a shorter deal but by testing the market he probably won't be able to get what he could have gotten from the Yankees in November.
