There's no debating Damon brought this on himself. Per ESPN's Buster Olney:
"In early November, Damon's agent, Scott Boras, compared his client to Derek Jeter in an interview with the New York Post and indicated at that time he was looking for a three- or four-year deal. Just standard agent posturing? Well, in the hours after the Granderson trade was completed, the Yankees moved to seriously engage Damon in talks, and -- as reported on ESPN.com at the time -- they were told over and over: If you're going to offer a contract that represents a decrease in salary, don't bother to make an offer. Damon, himself, told the Yankees that directly."

Boras and Damon should have realized after the Granderson trade that they had lost almost all of their leverage and if he wanted to stay with the Yankees he'd better make a deal. Instead he doesn't even try to negotiate and the Yankees move on. At the very least he should have tried to find another team to negotiate with because his asking price could be higher if the Yankees are still in play. Damon saying he hopes the Yankees don't treat Jeter this way is a joke. Jeter is a Yankee legend and the team will take care of him. Damon was just another paycheck player that will be remember as someone who played for numerous teams, and will never be spoken with as a Yankee legend.

It'd be interesting to see how much the deal was for (considering the Twins couldn't come close to what other teams would offer... so Mauer must love the Twin Cities a lot), but according to Buster Olney, a deal hasn't actually been made.

sf, I'd be wary of that jersey. If you remember a couple months ago, during playoff time, I won a jersey on eBay, and only afterward noticed that it was coming from China.

After a few weeks, I never received the jersey, so I filed a complaint, and ended up getting a refund. I left the guy negative feedback, and he angrily emailed me, saying he sent the jersey.

So skip ahead about a month or so, and I come home to find an unexpected package on the side porch. I notice it's from China, so I think "oh, cool, a free jersey", since I'd already been refunded the money. Luckily for me, since he'd waited so long to send it, it now included the WS patch on the sleeve.

From the looks of the auction you posted, I think that person is selling the same jersey (I notice the seller's location is Louisiana, so he might be re-selling a jersey he'd purchased from someone else... or he loaded up on them in Chinatown while visiting NYC or something).

If you look at the picture that zooms in on the World Series patch, you'll see that the pinstripes look kind of zig-zaggy on the side. The pinstripes should actually be thin smooth lines.

The jersey is also made out of some stretchy cotton-blend which has a distinct texture to it, whereas official jerseys, I think, are polyester and have more of a smoothness to them.

I'll post a picture in a minute (I emailed them to myself through my phone, but so far no mail).

Yeah, you can definitely feel the difference.

But since I ended up getting it for free, I can't complain. If I ever get a bigger dog, I'll have him wear it.

And I think I might carefully remove the patches (the inaugural season patch, for New Yankee Stadium, and the WS 2009 patch), and have someone sew them onto my real jersey for me.

It sounds like a deal is being worked on and there's been good progress but it's nowhere near a done deal. From what I've read the years and amount of the contract has been agreed on but they are still negotiating things like deferred payments. Regardless, it sounds like Mauer wants to stay in Minnesota and is going to give up a chance at the biggest contract in history.

Sort of funny to think about but most people believed the reason the Twins drafted Mauer was because they didn't think they'd be able to sign Mark Prior so they went with the cheaper, hometown option. Mauer also was the top football player in the nation and was set to go to Florida State so who knows how he would have turned out if he hadn't reached a contract with the Twins and had played football.

I don't know how he doesn't realize if they pay him upwards of 100 million they will have zero money to help him win a championship. Maybe he'd rather stay and lose then win and get paid somewhere else. I'm sure the yankees would fly him home to Minn. as much as he wanted if he came there lol.
