It's been interesting hearing about Joe Mauer's potential contract extension. It sounds like there is a good chance the extension happens this week. Apparently there is a chance Mauer could get pressured by the union not to give too big a discount. The thinking is if Mauer takes a huge discount then it is going to lower the value of future free agents, because if Mauer is only making (hypothetical number) $18 million per year, then how could a player that isn't near as good demand $20 million per year. In essence Mauer could be helping all the teams in the league by giving a huge hometown discount. I think Mauer should do what he wants. He wants to stay in Minnesota, why should he price out the Twins by demanding as much as he could get from a big market team?

Bad break for the Twins, as closer Joe Nathan has a torn elbow ligament in his right shoulder. Nathan will decide within two weeks if he wants to have surgery. If he has surgery he will likely miss the entire season.

That is a crippling loss for the Twins. Most do not realize that Joe Nathan has been the best reliever in baseball the last decade...and yes, that includes a certain Yankee great. If Mauer signs with another team, Minnesota's fans will be jumping off bridges.

Damn that sucks! He is huge to the twins. I hate seeing any players injured at spring training. The Dodgers lost their catcher (Russell Martin) yesterday for about 4-6 weeks.

Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci is reporting that baseball is considering a division realignment. This was referred to as a "floating realignment" in which teams could change divisions from year-to-year. Per Verducci "this "floating" realignment in which teams would not be fixed to a division, but free to change divisions from year-to-year based on geography, payroll and their plans to contend or not." Right now these plans are in the very early stages and is nowhere near a done deal.

That is the craziest plan I have ever heard from Selig. It basically seems hatched by the owners of the three non-powers in the AL East. They should just eliminate divisions in that case and let the teams with the best four records make the playoffs in the AL. The Yankees are the team that is messing everything up. Their de facto playoff slot is the problem.

I would hate it because for instance if the O's can't already beat the sox/yanks then whats to think if they win the Central under this plan they'd still have to play superior teams in the playoffs and I for one would rather see my team build a team and then compete then be moved around and given the opportunity to get whipped in the playoffs.

Garciaparra rejoins Red Sox for day, then retires

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Nomar Garciaparra rejoined the Red Sox for one day and then retired, ending a 14-year career in which he won an MVP award with Boston and became a beloved player in the city.
The shortstop signed a one-day contract with his former team Wednesday before announcing he's leaving baseball at 36 to become an ESPN analyst.

"From the first day I had the thrill of putting on a Red Sox uniform and playing in front of all the great fans at Fenway Park, I have felt at home in Boston," Garciaparra said in a statement. "While I had the privilege of playing with other legendary teams, I always saw myself retiring in a Red Sox uniform."

Garciaparra played parts of nine seasons in Boston. He was a six-time All-Star who captured the 1997 American League MVP Award and won batting titles in 1999 and 2000.

He is also set in Red Sox lore for being part of a four-team trade in 2004 that helped the club win its first World Series in 86 years.

"Nomar will always hold a special place in Red Sox history and in the hearts of Red Sox Nation," owner John Henry said. "His accomplishments on the field and in the community place him among the greatest players to wear a Red Sox uniform. We are very appreciative that Nomar is ending his career where it began."

Garciaparra spent the past five seasons with the Cubs, Dodgers and A's. He had a .313 career average with 229 home runs and 936 RBIs.

Garciaparra was in the thick of the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry, and always drawing respect.

"I always enjoyed playing against Boston because of Nomar," Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said. "I used to enjoy being mentioned with him."

Added Alex Rodriguez: "I love Nomar. He's a great player and a friend."

I wonder if he got an 04 ring for being part of the team before they won?
