But, they do it the right way by scouting & drafting well! I know their is a couple of players on the Yanks that are homegrown, but not that many! Pretty much the whole Ray's team is homegrown or thru smart trades, ie: Jason Bartlett & Matt Garza from Minnesota for Delmon Young! About money, just look at Carl Crawford, a homegrown Rays talent! He will be a free agent at the end of the year! But, do you think the Rays will have a chance of outbidding the Yanks or Sox for him??? Most of us, know is he gone at this year! The only good thing is the talent at the farm that will be replacing CC...Desmond Jennings & Matt Joyce! |

That's the thing with MLB contracts, players aren't eligible for free agency for so long that you can keep players cheap for at least 3 years, and after that players get arbitration for 3 years. I like when players and teams do what the Rays and Longoria did. Longoria gets long-term security in case he ends up a bust, and the Rays lock up a player and don't have to go through arbitration with them. Knowing what we know now Longoria probably cost himself around $20 million by signing the deal, but when he signed the deal there was no guarantee he was going to be as good as he is.

Ed Wade has run the Astros into the ground. Oswalt is on the decline and they have a bunch of players with no-trade clauses, preventing a true rebuilding.
MLB does not need a salary cap. There is only one team that really exists out of the continuum, the Yankees. They have won only one World Series in the last decade, largely thanks to a one-time spending spree as a consequence of the new stadium. What MLB does need is a salary floor, for teams like the Marlins that simply do not invest their profits into the team. With better owners, the Marlins likely could have duplicated the success of the Braves in the 90's, but penny-pinching has made them a perennial periphery contender instead. |

The only reason I think MLB needs a salary cap is that it would also bring a salary floor. I'd love for MLB to put a cap at around $130 million, but also a $90 million salary floor and force teams like the Marlins, Pirates, and Royals to spend money. One of the major reasons the NFL is so popular is because of parity. If you forced teams to spend maybe teams like the Pirates would contend and therefore bring in more fans.

I wouldn't say it is all Ed Wade's fault. The downfall started before that with the GM before him, Tim Purpura.
Purpura inherited a good team and we went to the World Series his first year in 2005 but that was not because of him. Then he proceeded to make terrible roster decisions and we had drafts where we would not even sign the guys we drafted, wasting draft picks. I think one year we only signed 1 of our first 7 draft picks. The farm system was already weakened because all of the trades made to strengthen to the major league team during our run of playoff years. Then you fail to add new young talent and you get a terrible farm system, probably the worst in the majors. |

They are playing day games because it is typically quite cold at night in Minnesota in early April, although that isn't the case this year. I've got a friend in St. Paul that's a Twins fan and he isn't happy about the day games because if he wanted to go he'd have to take a whole day off of work. He is going to the games this weekend though.

I agree with some of you. No salary cap required.
Here's why, most teams don't develope well. The Jays haven't from the mid/late 90s to probably last season. New GM seems to have a better idea of how to build a team over JP Richardi. For example if Jeter, Posada, Riveria and Petit(spelling) were on anyone's fave team for the past 16 years as the core, there would be many playoffs and possible WS wins. It's all about building your core and your system. Can you can throw tons of cash at the other parts like the Yankess do, but without that core they don't win. Paying A-Rod a billion dollars for example hasn't really done anything for them. But Riveria being lights out as a closer and even a guy like Gardner on the bench stealing bases in the 9th has(who makes nothing really haha). Without that core, the Yankees are the Mets. Anyway... I think Boston blows this year, the Yankees need to stay healthy, Blue Jays are learning and playing well but will stumble, O's not sure what direction they are going... Rays I think are the one to watch in the AL East this season. I fear the games against them(for my Jays) more than against the Sox and Yankees. Last edited by hc666; 04-16-2010 at 11:42 AM. |
