A new MLB record was set last night, and it's not the kind of record a player would really want to brag about having...

David Ortiz became the first player in MLB history to take more than 30 seconds to run the bases after a home run.

Wach the slowness in all it's glory here: Ortiz's solo homer

The Sox are playing well against good teams right now, it's a shame that they dug themselves such a deep hole so early.

Ortiz has been red hot in May, with 8 home runs and raising his batting average from .143 to .256. Most people were ready to write him off and said he was over the hill, but he's been great since his slow start.

Then maybe he was tired from all that heat

Well the Jays may not be leading the division but they're leading the MLB in Homers with 76.

Yeah, but they're 7 1/2 behind Tampa Bay. That's a number that should cause some worry for being almost fifty games into the season. It obviously is something that can be overcome, but they certainly don't want the gap to grow any larger.

I actually had a Sox fan try to tell me Ortiz was a first ballot HOF'er the other day. I would have laughed if it were not so sad. Even if it had never come out he juiced he is nowhere close to being a HOF'er.

Sorry, but catching and throwing the baseball is part of the game too. Not just hitting the ball deep and trotting around the bases.

Good luck trying to convince most of AL fans of that.

I still have a hard time believing they will stay anywhere close to that win %. Rays will probably finish with wins in the high 90's similar to two years ago (MAYBE 100 wins) and the Rays and Yankees likely both make the playoffs.

About last night, not much you can do! Wade Davis didn't look good and it doesn't help either to have the bases loaded in the 1st and 1 out and not score! Then in the 2nd, runners on 2nd and 3th with 1 out and not score again!

This happen to Tampa too last year! Tampa fought back in June and early July, but then hit a wall in late July and early August with a double digit losing streak!

Yep, he's no HOF'er in my book, either! Just like Hank Aaron is still my HR champ with 715! Barry who?

I agree with you again! No way will the Rays play .750 ball the rest of the season! They will go into a slump just like any other team, but hopefully they have a big lead in the standings so it won't hurt them!

Even more amazing is that the top 3 MLB teams in runs scored are all in the AL East.

Ruth is still the best in my book, but Hank Aaron is certainly among the best.

Ruth.... 714 home runs; 8,399 at-bats
Aaron... 755 home runs; 12,364 at-bats

And then there's this book...

That fatso was in a league of his own.

~~~~~
Isn't it crazy how much home runs have changed in the last 10 years?
Remember the late 90s when hitting close to 50 home runs per season was what any good hitter did?
Remember when Brady Anderson hit 50 home runs? Yeah... Brady Anderson.
And Sosa hit 60+ in consecutive seasons?
50 or more home runs in a season has been accomplished 41 times. Less than half (18) of those were before 1995. It was last achieved in 2007 (by A-Rod and Prince Fielder).
In a way I almost miss that, but I don't miss the rampant steroid use.
It kind of makes me worried about Ryan Howard, who hit 58 back in 2006. Assuming he's completely clean, I feel bad for him, because the company he keeps (people who've hit 60 home runs, or came within a few) have all seemed to turn out to be PED-users, which probably puts some suspicion on him. Howard hasn't broken 50 again since then, and is currently on pace to barely break 30 this season. So if he can't get back into a 50 HR type of season, the year of 58 seems like it will always stand out.
Meanwhile, the AL league leaders from last season were Teixeira and Peņa who finished with 39 each.
Steroid testing has drastically cut the number of homeruns needed to lead the league. I remember back in the 80's when people wondered if we would ever see 50-homer seasons again.
It's not even close. Aaron is probably among the top-5 players all-time. But Ruth is both the greatest power hitter and greatest overall player in baseball history. And had he stayed as a pitcher after going to the Yankees he would have been one ofthe greatest pitchers ever. Pitching is one part of Ruth's game always overlooked.
Ruth's lifetime pitching stats:
94 wins
46 losses
2.28 ERA
And he accomplished all that in only about 4 full-time seasons pitching.
Which makes Albert Pujols stats all the more amazing. The guy is a .330 average, 40+ homerun, 120+ RBI machine year in and year out. And never even a rumor of roids.
