I'd guess so. He had some pain in his side a few weeks ago, and it could still be related to that. But I imagine that sort of soreness could be related to an older body going through an MLB season.

In any case, whatever is wrong with him is causing his fastball to be a few MPH slower than normal, turning him from a nearly unhittable pitcher, to a kind of hittable one. And since he pretty much only throws fastballs (4 seam and cutters), there's not much he can do to fool people.

Mariano has a 1.88 ERA. I'd still take him over any other closer in baseball for the bottom of the 9th in a big game (the 2001 WS notwithstanding).

I thought the Yankees let this game slip away. They had a 2-1 lead, then the Twins came back to tie it.

Later, in the 8th, leadoff hitter got a base hit to right field, Gardner dove at the ball and missed, turning the single into a double.

Next batter went for a bunt, Yankees misplayed it, so everyone was safe.

First and third, with no outs. Pettitte worked some magic, and escaped with the game still tied.

Swisher came through in the 9th with a solo HR. Pettitte is in the game still for the 9th.

Edit: Nevermind. Pettitte is out. They had him warming up for the 9th to just stall for some extra time, so Rivera could get ready.

Really? I didn't see anything about in the States in your post. Anyway. And your reason is because top performers in sports are referred to the 'The Babe Ruth of??' Not very often. That might have been true before Jordan came along. I hear way more comparisons to Jordan than any athlete.

There was a lot of talk earlier about MLB records that will likely never be broken. Here's another good one. Doubt any manager breaks this record in my lifetime.

Most career ejections from a game: Bobby Cox - 154

I grew up a Braves fan and probably witnessed a good 100 or so of his ejections. Bobby may not be as entertaining with his ejections as someone like Piniella but he always makes sure to get his money's worth. It takes a lot of effort to get thrown out of nearly a full season's worth of games.

I'm going to miss seeing his face light up bright red and seeing his fat belly bouncing around as he trots out to yell at the umps after he reires later this year.

Here's the record breaking 154th ejection.

Sox continue to play well, sweeping the Rays. Ortiz is really on a tear now (check out his May numbers versus Pujols - wow!). It almost made me forget the putrid Celtics game. Almost.

Ubaldo Jimenez 2010 stats:

Wins - 9
Losses - 1
ERA - 0.88

ERA at the notoriously pro-hitter Coors Park - 1.29

Given up 7 runs in 71.1 innings. Has not given up more than 2 runs in any of his 10 starts.

He's making $1.25 mill this year. He's going to get a nice raise for his next contract.

We take a tiny bit of pride his one loss came against our Dodgers!

He's got quite a while to go until his next contract. He signed a four-year deal with 2 additional club options in 2009 for $22.75 million that put him under contract until 2014. It wasn't a bad deal for Jimenez though since he wouldn't have been eligible for free agency until 2014 anyway, but he could have made a killing in arbitration. It still made sense to sign a long-term deal though so he wouldn't have to go through arbitration and got some extra security in case he got injured, similar to what the Rays and Evan Longoria did.

MLB probing Guillen, West incident

Major League Baseball will investigate the actions that took place Wednesday in Cleveland when Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and pitcher Mark Buehrle were ejected by umpire Joe West.

West called two balks on Buehrle, who tossed his glove to the mound after the second one in the third inning and was ejected. Guillen was ejected after arguing the first balk call, in the second inning.

"The pitcher balked, and I called a balk, and he balked a second time and he got ejected for throwing his glove," West said Thursday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "Ozzie came out to protect his pitcher [after the first balk], which was probably a good idea at the time, because Buehrle was drawing lines in dirt on the mound [to show he's not moving his leg past where the rules stipulate], and he was about to get ejected then.

"[Guillen] even said he was out there not to argue the balk but to protect his pitcher, which he should come out in that situation. I said, 'Everything is OK now, Ozzie, you can go back to the dugout.' And he got mad, because I told him you can go back. He used a few profanity-laced lines and that got him ejected."

Its so crazy what you have to weigh, do you take the short term $$$ to secure the what if. Or do you hold out and hope you keep producing enough to earn the mega dollars.

Signing a long-term contract as a pitcher makes sense, because injuries can easily wreck a career. But the position players that give up so many arbitration years for a relatively paltry amount of money, lose out big time. Braun and Longoria will be ridiculously underpaid for several years. Longoria's agent was an idiot for structuring the deal that way.

Longoria signed his deal just days after his first major league game, and there was no way of knowing if he'd be as good as he's been. In addition if Longoria didn't sign that deal he would have been making in the low hundreds of thousands for years until he was arbitration eligible. Instead he chose to be rich immediately and set for life in the event he didn't pan out or got hurt. If I were him I'd have taken that deal too. He said at the time he knew he was potentially giving up a lot of money but he loved Florida and the team.

Nice 1-0 win by the Cubs today. It was a no-decision for Ted Lilly, who went 7 shutout innings in his strongest start of the season. Got to feel bad for Dodgers starter John Ely, who took the loss despite giving up only 1 run in 7.1 innings.

Yeah, once he's free though he will make the mega bucks, but you can't turn the money down, especially when you are making next to nothing.

I saw the win, on that note Ely had a great reflex catch too I think it was the 3rd or 4th.
