Wow, Cliff Lee going to the Rangers instead of the Yankees is a stunning turn of events. The Yankees would've been untouchable if they had landed him, but now the Rangers are gonna have a powerful rotation on top of that ridiculous offense down there in Texas. They are major contenders.

As a Braves fan I'm also glad the Phillies didn't land Lee; then they would have been major contenders in the NL.

As a Yankee fan who assumed the Yankees were just going to go after him in the off-season, I was kind of surprised about the news this morning that they were suddenly trying to pick him up now. The Rangers are much more of a playoff contender than the Mariners, but at least he didn't end up in TB.

Unless I missed something, he's still a free agent in 3-4 months. Yankees don't NEED him right now, and it makes sense to just spend money on him in the off-season, dump some other players (like Vasquez), and keeping the prospects.

Isn't Justin Smoak a pretty good prospect? Why would you trade that for a 3 month rental?

Yes, he's considered one of the best young prospects. This deal could either be a huge boost for Texas this year or a long-term disaster.

If you didn't know, he's a free agent at the end of the year so he can still be a Yankee. He wasn't needed badly. He just would have been a luxury for this season.

I am so happy that the Yankees did not get Cliff Lee this year. They will now have to face him most likely in the playoffs, which makes their chances of going to the World Series lower.

Or maybe not everyone is willing to jump on the Yankee bandwagon as you are. Crazy as it sounds not everyone looks at baseball through ugly pinstripe-colored glasses.

I'm a lifelong Floridian. My jumping aboard the Yankee bandwagon is about as ridiculous as someone from Montreal doing so. Oh wait...

The Reds were after Cliff Lee, as well. It would have been nice. Even if he only stayed around for 3 months, he would have given them a decent shot at a Pennant race. They have plenty of promising prospects to trade, but I guess they couldn't put a deal together.

No, not really. His Batting Avg may look good but his OBP, a better indicator, is a poor .351. His 2 HR/23 RBI/3 SB are not All-Star worthy numbers either. And I say this as a Braves fan who has watched most of his games this year.

He plays like every position, and he always puts the ball into play.
Is he the best choice? Maybe not. Is he an admirable/worthy choice? Certainly.

I don't think either situation is all that far-fetched.

The Yankees have their spring training facility in the Tampa/St. Pete area. Baseball in Florida didn't exist until the 90s, and I'm sure a lot of the locals felt a connection with the Yankees (among other teams with FL spring training locations). Although the Rays have built up quite a fan base over the past 2-3 years, I have always heard louder/more cheers for the Yankees at the Trop over TV broadcasts, than I have for the Rays. Surely there are lots of Braves fans (such as yourself) in the area as well though, as they had been the closest thing FL residents had to a home team until the Marlins and Rays came around.

As for Montreal... with the Expos now long gone, the Yankees are one of the three closest teams (Toronto, Boston the others), so if you wanted to stay somewhat local, and not root for the Nats, then the Yankees seem to be a pretty logical choice.

My boy Infante is up to .338 after going 7 for his last 8. He has 1 of the Braves 4 RBIs today.
The Braves have 13 hits so far, 12 singles and an RBI double by pitcher Tim Hudson.

With today's win over the Mets, the Braves are 44-18 since the end of April and have a 5-game lead in the NL East. The Braves' home record since the end of April is 25-4.

We are brutalizing the Mets in this series, because you know fans of the Mets really think they can be competitive for the rest of the season. Their inferior pitching will catch up with them if they do not trade for a starter and some help in the bullpen.

It would have been nice. Even if he only stayed around for 3 months, he would have given them a decent shot at a Pennant race. They have plenty of promising prospects to trade, but I guess they couldn't put a deal together.
