In regards to the Jays/Braves trade last week, seems the Jays are getting the better of the deal so far.
Y.Escobar (Jays) is batting .462 with 1 HR, 3 Runs, and 5 RBI in only 3 games A.Gonzalez (Braves) is batting .231 with 0 HR, 2 Runs and 0 RBI in 4 games Not to mention Escobar hit his 1st homer since September. I think the Jays aggressive hitting philosophy has something to do with this. Heck Ichiro would probably hit 40 HR in a Jays uniform. |

Saw that highlight over lunch. I have no idea how you blow that call. It wasn't even close. Catcher Henry Blanco even admitted after the game that the runner was safe.

I was reading an ESPN.com article yesterday that said the Rangers weren't going to be able to take on any more big salaries because the team is in bankruptcy so the only way they could get Prince is if they could dump some salary or the Brewers would pay some of his salary (as the Mariners did with Cliff Lee). It's unlikely the Brewers would take back any salary, they'd just want prospects, and if they were going to pick up some of Prince's salary they'd expect more or better prospects. Prince is entering his final year of arbitration and will be due about $16 million next year.

Yes, Prince will be an unrestricted free agent after next season. His agent is Scott Boras and the rumor is he thinks Prince is worth $200 million over 8 years. I really have no idea who would pay that much for Prince. Adrain Gonzalez is a free agent in 2011 as well and a lot of teams would prefer him and he'd be cheaper. Albert Pujols will be a free agent as well but most people believe the Cardinals will pay whatever it takes to keep him. I think a lot of teams would be concerned about Prince's weight and wouldn't sign him to a deal for longer than 5 years.

The ESPN.com article I was reading was minimizing the issue of his weight (comparing him to his also-large father and to Ryan Howard, both of whom the sportswriter believes "carry it well" and have "great feet"). Yeah I don't think I'd be willing at all to pay him $200m/8 years. I'm not sure he's consistent enough now, let alone down the road... |

Lou Piniella announced he will retire at the end of this season. It's not really like Piniella had a choice. His contract expires after the season and there was no way the Cubs were going to try to re-sign him considering the team's performance the last 2 years. I would expect him to do some sort of announcing work next year.

Stephen Strasburg was named MLB's most marketable player under 25 in a survey among 50 sports business execs and media personalities. Evan Longoria of the Rays was 2nd, followed by the Braves Jason Heyward, the Rays David Price, and unsigned Nationals draft pick Bryce Harper was 5th. It's interesting that the Rays and Nationals each have 2 of the top 5 and should help them build a larger fan base.
