Neither did I until looking at the list. But I suppose it makes sense. Chicago is like the 3rd largest market in the U.S. and the Cubs have a big following in that region of the country. Unfortunately for them they badly overpaid on a lot of guys. Look at their list of $10 mill earners this year. What a joke.

Alfonso Soriano $19,000,000
Aramis Ramirez 16,750,000
Kosuke Fukudome 14,000,000
Derrek Lee 13,250,000
Ryan Dempster 13,500,000
Ted Lilly 13,000,000
Carlos Silva 12,750,000

Just imagine if Mark Cuban had been able to buy the Cubs as he attempted to do. They's probably be on par with the Yankees. Now he's looking into the Rangers.

Lets just throw the payroll out the window for now and look at it like this, Phillies are 10 games over .500, won 8 in a row, and just moved up to within 2.5 games of the Braves . I can appreciate the whole approach by the Phightens as they are winning on the play of some young blood as half of the regular starting infield players are banged up and on and off the DL

Now if the team has the money then let em spend it, I can not remember the last time the Phillies didn't sell out a game and I was never one of those guys that accused the Yankees or Red Sox of buying their way to the playoffs and eventually the Series so if the Phillies see fit to spend all the $$ they can to get back there then I say have at it.

We just can't give away the farm cause it sure would bite if they lose in the way of the talent pool down the road and become un-bearable to watch again, been there done that and it gets ugly

Come on posey... Lets make it 22 in a row
It was a good run. Kinda glad that Mcoveys record is intact. I hate when records are tied. Posey looks good at 21. Hell he may even get another streak going.

You forgot the Cubs second-biggest contract, Carlos Zambrano at $17.875 million. He's also due over $55 million through 2013.

Jim Hendry has been going on a horrible spending spree for years. When the Tribune decided to sell the Cubs they wanted to make the club seem more attractive so they added big money stars. Most of the contracts worked out in the short-run (making the playoffs in 2007 and 2008) but the contracts were all too long. Soriano has been good this year but it's clear he isn't the player he used to be and he will be making $18 million per year through 2014. The Silva contract is in reality the Milton Bradley contract, since they had to take on a big contract to get rid of Bradley, and so far that deal has worked out.

I think the Cubs should not make any big deals this offseason. They've got some good young players that deserve a chance. Sadly the Cubs owner has already said Hendry will return so the Cubs will probably sign Adam Dunn to an 8-year, $160 million contract. I don't know how Hendry keeps his job, he's been making horrible moves for years. It looks like the Cubs aren't going to make any moves at the deadline. There is absolutely no reason for the Cubs to keep Lilly. He has a lot of value and they could get a decent prospect or 2 from a contender for his expiring contract.

It was a good game, but very sloppy. Thames threw that ground ball into the stands.. I couldn't help but laugh, but that wasn't as bad as Swisher striking out to Marte...

It sounds like the Cubs are going to get a trade of Ted Lilly done. Right now the Dodgers are the front-runners to get Lilly for some prospects. Cubs shortstop/second baseman Ryan Theriot was included in early talks but now it sounds like the Dodgers don't want him. The Twins are also interested in Lilly. The Dodgers are also talking with the Pirates about acquiring pitcher Paul Maholm.

I'm so mad the Nats dumped Matt Caps, not to mention are working hard to get rid of Dunn who has expressed a ton of interest to STAY here! damn Nationals.

It makes sense for them to get rid of Dunn now and try to re-sign him in the offseason. He likes it there but would probably appreciate a chance to go to a contender for the rest of the season.

If thats the case I don't mind, but I'd just worry he wouldn't come back.

Come on now, you really think the Nationals are going to offer Dunn remotely close to the kind pf contract he'll be looking for? They may as well trade now for some prospects. No chance they resign him.

Why did they do that? I looked it up and Capps is making a somewhat modest $3.5 mill this year. Not all that high for a closer that good...

The Nationals are willing to spend money, they offered Teixeira more money than he signed with the Yankees for, and have tried to get some other big money players. Now that they have a good young core and new park I could see more free agents willing to go there. There really aren't many teams that are going to be in the market for first basemen either, and he has talked about being happy in DC, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if if he signed with the Nationals.
