Too bad the team that would have to buy out the contract if he sucks isn't the Yankees, I hate them a lot more than the Braves. Then again the Yankees can afford it, $26 million is chump change to the Steinbrenners.

That is the reason for the announced rehab. He physically looked done this season, before the ACL tear. Coming back as an injured 39-year-old next year means he is in it for the money. I can't blame him, but he is a huge drain on the Braves at his current playing ability and salary. We are not the Yankees, who can afford carrying salaries of that nature.

Draft Notes: Gumbs, Dore, Ranaudo, Loux

The deadline for signing draft picks is just days away. Teams have until August 16th (next Monday) at 11 CST to sign their picks, and the agreements are starting to trickle in. Here are the details:

* The Yankees signed second-rounder Angelo Gumbs for $750K, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. The outfielder gets the largest bonus for any player drafted after the supplemental first round this year.
* Here's another above-slot deal for an outfielder: the Padres signed eighth-rounder Jose Dore for $450K, according to Callis.
* Not surprisingly, the Red Sox haven't had substantial talks with Scott Boras about signing Anthony Ranaudo, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com. Ranaudo pitched well in the Cape Cod League this summer and maintains that he's ready to return to LSU.
* MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo gives the latest updates on unsigned first round picks. Mayo reports indications that the D'Backs have continued talking to Barret Loux, who failed his physical.
* Here's our list of top picks to sign.

Chipper has always been a very solid team player. I really think it's early and there is at least a 50% chance he still retires before the start of next year. The fact that the only MLB manager he ever had in Bobby Cox is retiring after this season could play a role in him hanging it up. At this stage he's made so much money I seriously doubt another $13 mill or so for next season is a big motivator. He'll probably end up working in the Braves fron office after he retires anyway.

And this guy will just end up being traded to some celler-dweller for a big name player one day. He'll never play a game with the Yankees so what's it matter?

And you know this how? Keep in mind that Jeter isn't going to play forever. He has no more than 5yr left in his career.

I was half joking since the Yankees typically ship off their top prospects for overpaid veterans. As far as Jeter goes I have a funny feeling he'll retire sooner than people think. He just seems like a guy who won't play one day longer than he feels he can't produce at the highest level. My guess is he plays about 2 more years after this one.

Same can probably be said for Mariano Rivera. He's as great as he ever was but I get the feeling he sticks around for one more year tops.

Ya, he's definately a jerk. Back when he was with the Angels he and Scioscia hated each other and Guillen was suspended for the last few weeks of the season and the playoffs. Those problems continued when he played for the Nationals and he almost got in a fight with his former coach when the Nats and Angels played each other. With KC he had to be restrained from attacked a fan a couple years ago. He's also a known steroid user. Definately a lot of baggage but he's actually still a decent hitter.

And I always find this story amusing...

Toenail removal
On Feb. 19, 2009, The Kansas City Star reported that Guillén removed an ingrown nail himself, unbeknownst to club officials.

“ "The doctor saw me (Wednesday)," Guillén said, "and he said we’ll see how it feels in the morning. If it wasn't any better, he wanted me to have surgery. I thought, 'Whoaaa.' . . . So I went on my own (Wednesday) to the pharmacy, got some tweezers, came home and pulled it out myself. Let me tell you, I cried. I had one tough hour. But I got it out . . . I reached in there and poked around until I got the end of it. Then I counted one, two, three and just pulled . . . Oh, my God. It came out, but tears were running down my cheeks."

Nah, Mo will hang it up when he sees that he can't do it anymore. As far as Jeter goes, it'll most likely be the same case. Actually the Yankees have been keeping more of their top prospects in the last few years (with the exception of Austin Jackson) and have been more selective in trading them.

It's unreal how many teams think they can "change" a player's behavior. Seattle was what, Milton Bradley's 9th or 10th team? I couldn't believe anyone was willing to give that bum another chance after his disasterous year with the Cubs.

Another one-hitter for the Mets. I hope I get to see a Met throw a no-hitter in my lifetime.

That's always a nice experience, as long as it's not against The Phillies

What a year Tim Hudson is having for Atlanta. He threw a 3 hit shutout in 8 innings of work to improve to 14-5 with a 2.13 ERA. Most years that would put him on track for a possible Cy Young.

Funny thing is Brooks Conrad solo home run was the only Braves run in the 1-0 victory. Conrad is the guy playing 3rd base in place of Chipper whose out for the rest of the year.

Kinda sucks for the Phillies that they lost a 1-0 game the night after that epic 8 run comeback in the 8th and 9th innings the night before. But I'd still be happy if I were a Phillies fan. That team is really playing well. Hamels especially has been very good over the past month or two. Unfortunately he's getting aweful run support.
