I think there's a good chance Lee will stay in Texas, but it won't have anything to do with state taxes.

Any "extra" money he'd make in lower taxes could be money the Yankees tack onto their offer.

Athletes end up paying a "jock tax" in every state they play a game in. For example, when Lee pitches a game against the Mariners, he's earning his pay in Washington, and has to file that portion of his pay there (if he pitches one game there, and makes 30 starts a season, then 1/30th of his salary was earned in Washington).

So assume only about half of Lee's pay will get the benefit of lower Texas state taxes (it could be a little more, depending on how many, if any, interleague games the Rangers play against Houston each year).

When all's said and done (and calculated), the savings from playing in Texas won't amount to more than 2-3%. When dealing with a $120+ million contract, I don't think it will break the Yankees' bank to add another $5-6 million to make up the difference.

Not every location has a jock tax. Texas, Florida, Washington DC, and Toronto don't have a jock tax, and the Illinois' jock tax only applies to players from states with a jock tax, so it wouldn't apply either for players from places without jock taxes.

Ah, interesting to know. So that eliminates 2 of the 13 other AL cities (not counting Texas, assuming he stays there), plus Toronto, so he's still paying taxes in at least 10 places (more depending on inter-league matchups... if he were to stay with the Rangers, 22 of the 28 non-Texas teams are in jock tax states). And, granted, this is a relative new thing. 20 years ago there was no jock tax, so I wouldn't be surprised if some other states eventually add it (though I imagine Texas never will).

In any case, I still think it cuts down the "savings" to a small enough difference that a serious bidder (like the Yankees) can make up for it.

Wow. We're in some sort of whole now. We're not the Yankees. I don't think we can pull a 5-run comeback our of our asses. I mean there's a lot of innings left but if CJ doesn't straighten up, it won't matter.
