No, not intentional at all and the runner shouldn't have tossed the ball back.

I wouldn't mind if the All-Star Game winner = homefield advantage rule stuck around, if they changed the way the ASG is played. Put the AL's 9 best on the field against the NL's 9 best, and the winning team wins something for their league. That's fine with me. It requires a bit of a jump in logic, but it'd go something like this: -the winning team indicates the team's league is the better of the two -the better of the two leagues might mean it's a tougher league to play in (since that's where the "better" talent is) -therefore it's conceivable that a lesser team record-wise is actually the better team; put them in the "easier" league and their record would probably have been better That last point might make more sense when put in a college football perspective. Nobody would argue that a team in a weak conference being undefeated is better than a one-loss team from a tough conference, on the basis of record alone. The first point is the weakest, because in baseball I don't think winning 1 game really proves anything. But anyhow, as long as fans have a say in who gets into the ASG, it will always be a popularity contest, and managers have to manage everybody's ego, making sure they get their 1 inning or so in for the game. As long as that's the way the ASG is played, the homefield advantage tie-in is ridiculous. Last edited by toef; 10-24-2010 at 01:28 AM. |
