Derek Jeter's agent, Casey Close, said the Yankees' negotiating strategy during contract talks for his client has been "baffling."
"There's a reason the Yankees themselves have stated Derek Jeter is their modern-day Babe Ruth," Close said. "Derek's significance to the team is much more than just stats. And yet, the Yankees' negotiating strategy remains baffling. They continue to argue their points in the press and refuse to acknowledge Derek's total contribution to their franchise." Publicly, the Yankees are calling the Jeter negotiations purely a baseball deal and not a licensing deal, yet no other team is going to pay Jeter the kind of money they're reportedly going to offer, so what else are they paying for? By "baffling" what he really means is OMG the Yankees isn't giving my client 100% of what he asked for! Jeter is a terrific player and one of the Yankees best but modern day Babe Ruth? There is NO modern day equivalent of Babe Ruth nor will there likely ever be.

Babe Ruth was also one of the greatest pitchers of his era. Last I checked Jeter has not thrown 29 consecutive shutout innings in the World Series, something Ruth did.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Tuesday that Derek Jeter "should test the market" if he doesn't approve of the club's three-year, $45 million offer.
Cashman is right. Jeter wouldn't find anything close to that offer in free agency. He hit just .270 with a 710 OPS in 2010 for the Yankees and again showed diminishing range at the shortstop position. Josh Hamilton was selected on Tuesday as the American League's 2010 Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Hamilton received 22 of 28 possible first-place votes to beat out Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera and Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano.

The Tigers added a middle of the order bat today, reaching an agreement with catcher Victor Martinez on a four-year, $50MM contract.

The Giants re-signed first baseman Aubrey Huff to a two-year, $22MM deal today. The contract pays $10MM per year and includes a $10MM club option for 2013 with a $2MM buyout. The deal does not include a no-trade clause

I just don't get what Boston is doing. They aren't a small budget team. Surely they could have given Martinez more than $12.5 mill/yr. The guy is a consistent .300+/20+ HR/80+ RBI guy for years now and is only 31. What's their fall-back plan? Do they have some great rookie or would they actually put a 38 year old Veritek back starting?

EDIT - Just remembered they have Saltalamacchia. I suppose he'd be #1 on their depth chart at catcher. Still, that's a huge downgrade unless the guy turns out to be much better than he has been.

Thats my guess, now looking back on it they gave up entirely to much for Victor.

Didn't they only give up Masterson? The guy hasn't shown very much potential from what I've seen and his stats are pretty mediocre. Doesn't seem like Boston gave up much for him.

He was great in Boston and looked to be another notch on their long list of pitchers, I think they converted him to a starting guy and that could have had the Jaba effect.

According to Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News, the Yankees have not yet made an offer to Cliff Lee.
Feinsand's source refuted the report that New York has offered Lee a six-year deal worth around $140 million. If that's true, the Yankees will assuredly make an official offer at some point in the very near future.
