It was simply a device, doubt they care that much about it now that Crawford has been signed and the token offer is off the table.

All the Yankees know is Cliff Lee was the biggest stumbling block last year between them and a championship, if you can't beat them join them. Best case scenario, he has another year like he did last year for them and helps them get past teams like the Twins and the Rangers in the post-season. Worst case scenario, he stinks on ice and they deactivate him but at least they didn't leave it to chance that he would excel for someone else.

Lee was pretty average and even below average before catching fire... He can always fall back into his old ways nobody is immune to that

I think comparing Zito to Lee is pretty fair, and if anything Zito's resume was better than Lee's prior to signing with the Giants. Zito was 3 years younger than Lee is now when he signed and had gone to one more All Star game. Both had one Cy Young. People forget that in 2007 Lee was demoted to Triple-A and that over the last two seasons Lee is only 26-22. He's really only had two great seasons, when he went 18-5 in 2005 and won the Cy Young in 2008 with a 22-3 record.

In the wake of Werth's and Crawford's contracts you think Ryan Braun is regretting that extension? The guy is just as good if not better than both of them.

Cliff Lee has mainly pitched in pitcher's park too. With the exception of 2007 Cleveland was always in the bottom half when looking at park factors, and Seattle is a pitcher's park as well.

Orioles acquired SS J.J. Hardy, INF Brendan Harris and cash considerations from the Twins for RHPs Brett Jacobson and James Hoey.
The Orioles have been actively shopping for a shortstop and they finally got their man. Hardy batted .268/.320/.394 with six home runs, 38 RBI and a 714 OPS this past season while playing excellent defense at shortstop. He could make somewhere close to $7 million through the arbitration process this winter, a price the Twins apparently weren't willing to pay. Hardy represents an immediate upgrade over Cesar Izturis and and will be part of a revamped left side of the infield along with the recently-acquired Mark Reynolds. Dec. 9 -

lol Fates got you there buddy I'd like Lee for that A.J. Burnett money but not close to CC money. He's basically capitalizing because there isn't much else pitching wise out there.

if players like Werth, Gonzalez and Crawford are getting money thrown at them like its nothing can you imagine how much Albert Pujols will get next year

I'm thinking $200/mil for 8 years

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Reds have signed outfielder Jay Bruce to a six-year, $51 million contract extension.
The deal also contains a club option for a seventh year that would bring the total worth to $63 million. Bruce was up for salary arbitration for the first time this winter and could have started down a path of negotiating raises each year. Instead he opted to cash in now, committing Thursday to an extended stay in Cincinnati. These deals often go well for both sides. Dec. 9 - 11:41 pm et

Looking at the free agent list is just depressing for me. It's looking at a list of players Cleveland won't sign. The Red Sox have the smartest signing thus far with Crawford. Had I been Tampa I would have done everything in my power to keep him.

With their type of ownership there is absolutely nothing they could have done.

I think he could get more than that if he becomes a free agent. If a 32-year old Alex Rodriguez can get a 10-year, $275 million contract then I would think a 31-year old Albert Pujols could get at least $225 million. The only problem Pujols could have is the fact that the Yankees and Red Sox are both set at first base for many years so a bidding war between the two biggest wallets won't break out. The Cubs signing of Carlos Pena for only a year shows they'd be interested in Pujols next year, and the Dodgers (if their ownership situation is settled) and Angels would certainly be interested. I still think there's a great chance he stays in St. Louis though.
