This isn't exactly an MLB story, but it's a college baseball story about a promising young player. Turns out the kid who had that 56 game college baseball hitting streak has been charged with rape in the Bahamas. What a waste. Amazingly enough the maximum punishment for rape (1st time offender) is 7 years in the Bahamas. WTF kind of justice is that?

Garrett Wittels faces rape charge

The Florida International baseball player with a record-setting 56-game hitting streak has been charged with rape in the Bahamas, court officials in the islands' capital said Monday.

Garrett Wittels was accused of raping a 17-year-old teenage tourist on Dec. 20 while on a visit to the archipelago east of Florida. The 20-year-old infielder ended last season with the second-longest hitting streak in NCAA Division I history, two behind the 58-game run by Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura in 1987.

Two of Wittels' friends also face rape charges, officials said.

Robert Rothschild, 21, of New York, was accused of raping two 17-year-old girls, while Jonathan Oberti, 21, also of New York, was charged with raping one, according to Bahamian court officials.

lol one thing I don't forgive people for and its that... Just admit your game is salty and girls aren't into you even as a d1 athlete go find some groupies, but rape.. SAD

I'll reserve my final judgement when more details come out, I don't want it to be like the Duke Lax case.

I'm reserving my judgment for now. From what I've read the girls lied about their ages to get into a casino and lied and said they were college students. I'll wait for all the facts to come out.

Andy Pettitte's texts hint at retirement

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has been exchanging text messages with Andy Pettitte during the offseason as Pettitte sits at home in Deer Park, Texas, deciding whether to pitch for the Yankees in 2011 or retire.

Teixeira said on Tuesday that, through his communication with Pettitte, he's gotten the sense that the veteran left-hander is "leaning toward retirement." But the Yankees first baseman is holding out hope that Pettitte will return to a Yankees rotation that sorely needs him next season.

A tainted vitamin injection unknowlingly gave him roids? Sure Rafie... If you're going to lie you could come up with a better one. The old "some dude gave me an injection but I didn't know what was in it" excuse has never worked. Seriously, how many people out there get "mystery injections" of something and have no idea what it is? That's never happened to me. And no Rafie, you are not going to make the HOF . At least not until you're long and gone and maybe the Old Timer's Committee votes you in.

Rafael Palmeiro claims no steroid use

Rafael Palmeiro insists he never used performance-enhancing drugs during his major league career despite having tested positive for a steroid just weeks after he reached 3,000 hits.

Palmeiro told SI.com on Wednesday that he hopes Hall of Fame voters will forgive his mistake of taking a tainted vitamin injection in 2005 while he was with the Baltimore Orioles and elect him to the Hall in his first year of eligibility.

Results of voting will be announced next week.

The four-time All-Star with 569 home runs and 3,020 hits famously wagged his finger at a congressional hearing in 2005 and asserted he never took performance-enhancing drugs. Several months later he tested positive for a steroid, which he blamed on a vial of B-12 vitamins that was given to him by teammate Miguel Tejada.

Palmeiro is dreaming if he thinks he has any chance at the Hall of Fame. Better players than him have been kept out of the Hall due to steroid suspicions, much less a positive test. I'm guessing Palmeiro will get somewhere around 10% of the vote.

Yep. Mark McGwire gets something like 25-30% of the vote consistently every year since he became eligible. Palmeiro getting around 10% sounds about right. Palmeiro was a good hitter but nowhere remotely close to McGwire.

Palmeiro probably has to be very careful with what he says on the subject given his outright denial before Congress. If he comes out and admits he juiced in the days before his testimony I suppose it's still possible he could get nailed for perjury. Palmeiro was lucky that his only failed test happened after his testimony. His decision to lie rather than take the fifth was a very bad idea.

The Statute of Limitations for federal perjury is 5 years, and he testified in March 2005, so he could no longer be charged with perjury.
