Orioles, Lee Agree To One-Year Deal
By Zach Links [December 31 at 10:07pm CST]

10:07pm: Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports tweets that Lee's deal with the Orioles includes incentives and could be worth as much as $10MM.

3:42pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman tweets the "early word seems to suggest" that Lee got close to $8MM, maybe $7.5-8MM. He adds that the amount is unconfirmed, however. In a second tweet, Heyman mentions that Lee turned down an $8.5MM offer from the Padres, while Dan Hayes of The North County Times tweets that he asked them for $10MM.

MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli says Lee's physical will likely be Wednesday (via Twitter).

2:32pm: The Orioles and Derrek Lee have agreed to terms on a one-year deal, reports Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun (via Dan Connolly on Twitter). The deal is pending a physical, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The veteran slugger is represented by CAA.

Baltimore has been in talks with Lee for a good portion of the winter and recently began zeroing in on him as talks with Adam LaRoche stalled. While LaRoche seeks a three-year, $21MM committment, Lee made it known that he was willing to take a one-year deal. Terms are not yet available but it was reported that the O's were open to giving the 35-year-old a contract in the one-year, $8MM range.

Lee had a down year in 2010 by his standards, hitting .260/.347/.428 with 19 homers for the Cubs and Braves. Although he qualifies as a Type-A free agent, the Braves did not offer Lee arbitration and will not receive compensation draft picks.

I think he should be fine on our team now that he doesn't need to be a constant 1-4 guy like on the Cubs. I feel like we've got enough where he just needs to show up everyday (even though doing that in Chicago was hard enough for him )

According to MASN's Jen Royle, the Nationals and Adam LaRoche are discussing a multi-year deal worth $8-9 million per season.
Royle is the same one that reported earlier this month that LaRoche had a three-year offer from the Orioles worth anywhere from $16-21 million, and she's saying that the Nationals are offering more than that. It seems like a bit much to be giving a guy that made $4.5 million last season and didn't have a great year, but money doesn't seem to be an object this offseason for the Nats. Dec. 31 - 5:46 pm et

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated is reporting that the Yankees might consider signing Andruw Jones to bolster their outfield depth. Jones hit .230 last year with the White Sox, his highest average in 4 years. Heyman also said the Yankees might consider bringing back Johnny Damon.

I can't recall a worse case of a position player hitting brick wall like Andruw Jones in my lifetime. He was a fine hitter and world-class defensive player at one time. He was cruising towards a HOF career before hitting a brick wall and turning into a sub-.200 hitter several years ago. It's really bizarre. In any case I think he's done. He's has chances with a few teams to restore his career and failed. I have no idea what the Yankees think he could provide.

Alfredo Simon told reporters in the Dominican Republic that the man he shot on New Year's Eve was his friend and that it was an accident.
"It wasn't a thing like we began arguing and I started shooting," Simon said. "It was some accident; it happened by accident. That's why I came here -- to open my soul." That might not help much. Michel Esteban Castillo is still dead and his brother Starlin is still gravely wounded. Dominican authorities are reportedly seeking a three-month incarceration for the O's reliever so that the case can be more widely investigated. That would obviously put him out for spring training and a guilty verdict could mean 30 years in jail. Jan. 3 - 3:00 pm et

He hasn't gone on trial yet. They want to keep him in prison while they investigate.

I don't know (I sure hope he makes it ) x10 gold glove, 5x all-star and possible 500 home runs if he can keep playing.

That should sufice (hopefully for that jersey's sake )

No it won't. Andruw is not making the HOF. You cannot make the HOF having trouble batting .200 for a span of several years when you're supposed to still be in your prime. No chance he makes the Hall regardless of his defense.

And if his yearly numbers were consistently .256, or say ranged between .240 and .270 I think he'd be a shoe-in thanks to his amazing defensive skills. Unfortunately for Andrew he was a decent .270'ish hitter till he hit a wall and became a .200 hitter ever since.

I think it was around 1993 (I was about 13) when I was at a sports card convention and Chipper Jones was there signing anything you wanted for like $5. You even received a certificate of authenticity and free baseball for him to sign. Since he was still in the minors then and I'd barely heard of him I passed, even though I was a big Braves fan even then. Ya... great call on my part.
