I couldn't agree more. I despise the Phillies, but I don't see how they don't win the World Series this year as long as they stay healthy.

Yeah, like The O's (or anyone else) are going to pay him more. He's not going anywhere. He just bought a house when he signed with the Yankees and lives here the whole year (and remember, he's from Cali). He's committed to staying here. He's just using the opt out clause as leverage to getting a longer term deal.

Oh not us we don't pay anyone , but say Boston needed another pitcher, the Cubs made a run and came up short, plenty of teams if he blew the league up this year and opted out, then I think he could get more per year (probably not a longer term deal) but more per year than now.

Trust me, if he has another stud year and he does opt out, we'll basically give him a blank check. Nobody will outbid us.

Ya, it's just leverage that CC is wisely using. No team is going to pay him more than the Yankees already are, much less more. But he'll get some more years added to his deal for what he's accomplished there. The guy has actually shown a lot with the Yankees, including losing a significant amount of wait this offseason. Back when he signed with NY I had a funny feeling he'd turn into a fat lazy slob. He definately proved me wrong.

The fact that NY missed on Cliff Lee probably gives him even more leverage over the Yankees for more money since they already have a lack of depth.

It's a terrible deal. Bautista never cracked 17 HR or 63 RBI's in a season till he had 54 HR/124 RBI's last season. There's no way in hell that guy hasn't roided up. And just as quickly as his numbers inflated I'll bet they collapse. It's hard to believe Toronto would give him that much money given their limited resources.

You're talking about a team whole gave Vernon Wells a ridiculous contract (a few years ago and who finally got rid of it).

True. I still cannot believe the Angels took him of their hands. Vernon Wells is due $86 mill over the next four years. The Angels were insane for taking that guy.

I'm not sure what to think about the Bautista deal. On one hand my biggest fear is that he is going to go back to below average numbers, but if he can even come close to continuing his success from last year it was well worth the money. Obviously that is a big if, only time will tell. I sure as hell hope he can do it.

With that said, the Angels haven't really spent any money this off season.

Nothing major (they don't want to make a bad move out of desperation because they'll wait til the trading deadline when certain teams fall out of the race).

It's going to be Brady Anderson all over again, minus the epic sideburns.

I don't know man, if we can keep the good juice in Toronto he may well be worth the money.

Farewell to a terrific player. Not quite a HOF'er but a great career nonetheless.

Jim Edmonds retiring from game

Jim Edmonds drove a pitch over the right-field wall late last season and began home run trot No. 393.

Somewhere between second and third base at Miller Park on Sept. 21, he took a few awkward steps.

"Something popped," he said then.

Turns out that was the end of a 17-year major league career.

Two weeks after he agreed to a minor league contract that returned him to the St. Louis Cardinals, Edmonds retired Friday at age 40 because of his injured right Achilles tendon.

"Although I feel that I can still play and contribute, the risk of permanent injury is too much for me to chance," Edmonds said in a statement released by the club. "As much as I regret this announcement, I feel it is for the best."

Edmonds started last year with the Milwaukee Brewers and finished with the Cincinnati Reds but was injured and missed the NL playoffs. The eight-time Gold Glove winner came back to the Cardinals on Feb. 4, rejoining the team he played for from 2000 to 2007.

St. Louis team doctors told Edmonds the injury was so severe he would not be medically cleared to play and that he could hurt himself even more.

"I saw him in early January and I saw that he was a long way away physically -- he had to work," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "I was not optimistic."

Edmonds was a four-time All-Star, popular with teammates and fans alike for his acrobatic catches and rugged look. When baseball people mentioned "gamers," his name was always near the top of the list.

Edmonds helped the Cardinals win the 2006 World Series, hitting .257 with 19 homers and 70 RBIs that season.
