It's crazy that Roberto Clemente finished with exactly 3,000 hits because it's not like he planned it that way. He got his 3,000th hit in his final at-bat of the 1972 regular season and then died in a plane crash during the off-season.

Looks like Francisco Liriano got yanked from our starting rotation, can't say I'm surprised by the move considering his wild inconsistency.

Wow, for a man who has pitched 1.75 no-hitters in the first half of the season, that's crazy to conceive.

Then again, he did give up six walks in his actual no-hitter.

How soon after the All-Star Break do you think he'll be back?

I don't know, it may be temporary, then again they may just be giving him a bit of a break. There's no announcement about it, he's simply not listed to start any time soon. I find it odder that they're playing Joe Mauer at 1st base, I guess they really didn't like Morneau's back-up.

Hopefully ownership will stop pocketing the revenue sharing money they get from the big market teams and invest it back into the team like they are supposed to do.

Are you mad? Jeter is a 1st ballot HOF'er and you say he isn't worthy?

I can't wait for this Jeter 3,000 hits circus to be over. It's starting to overshadow the team objective (winning the WS).

I guess, but that still doesn't make up for the fact that he's a Yankee.

Besides, there are enough Yankees in the HoF already.

Pete Rose record is one of those untouchable records, seeing that he played 24 seasons of injury free ball and batted a career .303. The guy played in over 3500 games, whereas Jeter is sitting at 2360 and is quickly regressing.
Too bad he screwed it up for himself or else he'd be a definite Hall of Famer.

Also an interesting note, Wade Boggs was the only player to record a homerun for his 3000 hit.

It's too bad Ichiro played a substantial amount of games in Japan. If he started his career in the US he would possibly have broken Pete's record.

You yankee fans don't have to worry, Jeter is making it into the HOF. The only thing that could keep him out is PED scandal ala McGwire and Bonds.

Anyone who doesn't think he should be a HOFer is either delusional or a hater.

Does Jeter deserve all the awards he's received throughout his career? Perhaps not all of them, but most.(A couple of those gold gloves could have gone to someone else) Should he still be playing shortstop? No, but the Yankees can't really put him anywhere else unless they flip him and Cano which would probably make their defense worse playing two guys of out position.

I'll say this much. If Jeter were to get his 3000th hit in Fenway park, he'd receive a standing ovation from the fans. His next at bat he would be promptly booed, that imo says it all.

After Jeter the next in line for 3000 hits are:

Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez- 2842
Alex Rodriguez- 2760
Johnny Damon- 2662
Ichiro- 2342

A Rod is probably the only one of those guys that will get to 3000. I can't see Damon or Pudge getting to 3000. Pudge would need likely 2-3 more seasons, and Damon would probably need 4 more years, and neither of them will be playing that long. If Ichiro keeps getting 200+ hits each year he could get there in around 2014 but I've got to think he'll slow down at some point as he's already 37.

If Jeter plays until he is 45 (without having a big injury) he may have a chance at the all time hits record.

Rose played 3,562 games to get 4,256 hits. ~1.19 hits per game.
Jeter played 2,360 games to get 2,997 hits. ~1.27 hits per game.

If Jeter plays 1,202 more games and keeps getting hits that are consistant with his average he'd finish with ~4,524 hits. Very unlikely.

From 1996 to 2010 Jeter played 2,280 games, 152 games a season (started while the season was going on in 1995, and we're currently over half way through the 2011 season). How much longer can he play shortstop though, and would he even consider the outfield or DH? Probably not. I think Jeter may retire when he realizes he's hurting the team more than helping them, but who really knows.

Pete Rose got 3,000 hits in 2,370 games (May 5, 1978, 37 years, 21 days of age).

Let's say Jeter gets his 3,000 hits tomorrow, game 2,362. (July 8, 2011, 37 years, 12 days of age).

Very similar.

Haven't Jeter's recent years (2006-2009) also been some of his most productive? I'm just noting his four Silver Slugger awards during that timespan.

Since 1996 he's only had one season with fewer than 179 hits, which was in 2003 when he played fewer than 120 games. Before 2004 he had to compete against A-Rod for the Silver Slugger award for SS.

If Ichiro played his entire career in the U.S. he might have actually challenged the career hits mark.
