The guy did not seem like a genius, giving the ball immediately back to a guy making $17 million a year was dumb.

You see? that's what I'm talking about.

It's about his love of his team and the game. Not everything is about money.

I think he did it out of respect for Jeter and the team he obviously loves. From a financial perspective it was a poor decision, but I applaud the kid for listening to his heart. He did the right thing, and I wish more people would do that these days.

Darren Rovell of CNBC said on his Twitter account that the fan should not be subject to any taxes and instead the Yankees should have to pay the gift tax because the IRS previously ruled that a baseball caught and immediately given back has no value, so the fan received something from the Yankees in exchange for something worth nothing and it is therefore a gift from the Yankees.

Interesting. I've never heard of that. If that's true, then this should the right thing for the team to do (just like the guy did the right thing by giving back the ball).

It's becoming possible that Christian Lopez will end up making more money by giving the ball back rather than selling it. The ball was projected to sell for $200,000-$300,000 if it was auctioned, and taxes would have taken around 40%, so he's probably looking at clearing $120,000-$180,000. Since giving it back he's received Yankees tickets/merchandise valued at $80,000 (tax free or taxes covered), $25,000 minimum from Modell's, and priceless items like a real Yankees 2009 World Series ring (a gift from the owner of Modell's, which should make it tax free) and Topps is making a baseball card of him and will let him pick the image for Jeter's 2012 card. If he wants he could go on the TV circuit, which could probably net him at least another $50,000.

Tell that to Derek Jeter who held out for far more than he was worth this past offseason. Guess millionaires are held to a different set of morals/values than us commoners, huh? Sorry, but Jeter is worth 9 figures. He can afford to buy the ball for fair market value.

Very classy move by Russel Martin during the AS game. Originally, he was going to play the 2nd half of the game but he gave his playing time to Matt Wieters.

I really hope Brian Wilson doesn't have a short shelf life like most closers do. The league just wouldn't be the same without his personality. He'd be a good replacement for Dos Equis when the "most interesting man in ther world" retires.

The Jays offense worked the Yankees pretty good tonight. Colon layed an egg, giving up 8 runs in 0.2 innings and their bullpen was tagged for another 8 runs.

Twins now 25-11 in their last 36 after blasting the Royals 8-4, nice 2 run shot by Plouffe to give us a boost. Delmon Young had 3 hits in his first game off injury, not bad at all.

That division is still wide open. Wouldn't really surprise me if Minnesota won the Central again, though I'd give Detroit a small edge for now.

Derek Holland is hot right now!!! A CG, 5-hit shutout. And he only walked 1 batter. I have been pleasantly surprised by our starting staff this year. I hope they can keep it up because we can hit off anyone....

Or so I thought during the WS last year.
