What happens to the Tigers if you take out Verlander. I bet you they don't finish first in the AL Central. Verlander truly was the MVP of the league this year, he single handed won them the division, Single handed stopped 12 losing streaks, He single handed them 20+ wins, I wont say 24 full ones because there was about 4 games where he was behind by 5-6 runs and the Tigers bossed up and won it for him.

The guy was stellar, The only other guy I would consider for this award would be Nelson Cruz from the Rangers that guy was a beast in the postseason, as well as the month of Sept. and had it not been for Cruz the Rangers never would have made it to the World Series.
It's a silly comparison. Nobody knows how many wins an individual player helped win for his team in a game like baseball. Comparing pitchers who throw 34'ish games per year to a player who plays 150+ games is laughable.

And by the way, Verlander's ERA of 2.40 was nothing special and his run support per game was 4.73. He received 4+ runs per game in support in 21 of his 34 starts. That's why he won so many games.

Jose Bautista

First in HR, Slg%, OPS, OPS+, Walks, Intentional Walks
Second in obp by a single point.

Played both 3B and RF effectively with probably the strongest arm in the game.

Yeah, if you're going to give the MVP to a guy like Verlander, why not give it to Pedro Martinez in 1999/2000 then?

In the past there have been plenty of better pitchers that have not won the MVP. I think the voters bought into the hype.

I thought Jose Bautista should have won it in my opinion.

Bautista gets screwed because he plays for a mediocre team. I guarantee you if he played for a winning ball team, he would have at least one MVP to his name. It's really sad.

That plus the fact that he plays for a Canadian team while most of the voters are American.

Don't worry Chad our new uniforms next year will be the spark that gets us back to the playoffs.

Please the Tigers won their division by a whopping 15 games. You're telling me they couldn't have found a competent pitcher to get them at least a dozen wins to still win it. The standings argument is so weak.

Do you have some mathematical formula for determing that? Otherwise you're just making stuff up. I'm sorry, but there is no magic formula for determining how many wins a position player contributes. All we have to go on are offensive stats, which Bautista was clearly tops. Comparing pitchers to hitters is laughable. That's why the Cy Young exists.

Verlander's run support was 4.73 runs per game. Just about any competant pitcher should win a minimum of 14-15 games with that kind of support.

Glad you mentioned him. Looked it up and Lincecum had run support of just 2.81 RPG in 2011. He had 18 starts where the Giants scored 2 or fewer runs. That's inexcusible. In 2010 his run support was a solid 4.45.

They won by 15 games because the other teams in the division laid down, up until the month of Sept the Tigers were up by 4 games.

So now we're supposed to make assumptions about scenarios that didn't even happen? This is exactly why looking at W-L records is so ridiculous with awards like this one. Here's a crazy idea, just give it to the guy with the best numbers - Bautista.

They really should just re-name the MVP award Offensive POY. Any comparison between pitchers and hitters is idle speculation and allows for awards to overlap.

This same thing happens in other sports too. In the NFL is almost impossible for anyone other than a QB or RB to win MVP.

I'm watching ESPN right now and Buster Olney just said, "Kemp is a lot to the National League what Jose Bautista was to the American League where he was probably the best player, but the Dodgers didn't contend all year. I think in the end Ryan Braun probably will have an advantage because of that."

So apparently MVP does not mean best player in the league.

Verlander deserves the MVP. Every night he took to the mound, he had that intimidation factor and the ability to throw no-hit stuff. No other player had that intimidation factor in the AL this year. You talk all you want about stats but there is also that intangible variable that must be taken into consideration.

I think Kemp is safe. There's a lot of ground to cover in center field at Chavez Ravine but at the same time it's certainly not a hitters park.

Same here. I think Braun might have won it if he were the only star on the Brewers, but most likely he and Fielder will split votes.

Hard to win when you also lose a 1st place vote to Michael Young of all people.

I tried to even see if it was a home/road split thing but it's not

Home

.305 .454 .609 20 HR

Away

.300 .442 .607 23 HR

He had more HR on the road. Can't use the lame Blue Jays staff were stealing signs excuse either.
