Agreed...No team should be giving out 8 year deals. He'd be in his mid 30's by then and as hard as he throws, his arm could be shot. Let's be honest, there's only ever been one Nolan Ryan.
[Show spoiler]I forgot about "Juiced Clemens"...sorry.

Really the only team that should even consider pitcher deals for longer than 5 years, MAYBE 6 tops is the Yankees and their massive financial resources. If a team like San Francisco commits 8 years at $20'ish mill per year and Lincecum has a string of devastating injuries or falls apart for whatever reason is severely cripples the franchise for many years.

And after that disgusting Barry Zito deal I'm sure the Giants of all teams knows what it's like to get burned on a massive deal.

.
Exactly, they wont get burned twice with giving another pitcher a 7 year $120+ deal

But i'll tell you this much, the 2010 World Series title makes all of of Giants fans forget how bad that contract really was

I doubt Zito really wants to leave. He seems happy there. They'll work something out. And if I'm the Giants remind Zito that if they give him too much they won't be able to afford an offense upgrade, meaning he'll keep getting <3 runs of support each game. And besides, if he leaves California it'll be much harder for him to buy his hippie lettuce.

Well there's only one big name free agent left and it's like his agent has locked him away in a cellar. Seriously, there's been no Fielder news for almost a month. What gives?

As far as that trade is concerned, it could either work or be an even bigger disaster than it was in Chicago. If Zambrano and Guillen really get into it, the fireworks generated will be enough to light up the entire city.

both Zambrano and Chicago needed to part ways which i think will be good for him.. a new start...

and i actually saw on espn last night that it looks like the Nationals are front runners for Fielder right now....

Jon Heyman of SI.com writes that the Nationals do appear to be "deep in the mix" for free agent first baseman Prince Fielder.
However, Heyman opines that because as many as seven or eight other clubs also have also expressed some level of interest, it's a little too early to declare the Nationals as the favorites to sign him. That being said, he did peg the Nationals as the "most likely" team to sign him, followed in order of likelihood by the Mariners, Brewers, the ever-amusing mystery team, Marlins, Rangers, Orioles, Cubs and Blue Jays. Scott Boras always has a plan. Fielder is going to end up getting way too much money and way too many years because Scott Boras is an evil genius. If you look at many of the worst contracts in baseball, such as Barry Zito, Jayson Werth, J.D. Drew, A Rod, and Daisuke Matsuzaka, you'll notice that Scott Boras was the agent that negotiated the deal.

Ah so he's the Drew Rosenhaus of MLB, got it. Hope he doesn't end up representing any of the Twins any time soon.

Marlins may as well sign Manny too. Might as well go for the complete collection of head cases. If nothing else the Marlins will be a fun team to follow with Ozzie and the collection of characters.

OMG check out the numbers for the Pujols deal. A 10 year "personal services agreement after he retires worth $1 mill per year? This is insane. This deal could look really ugly 5 or 7 years from now.

Base Salary
2012: $12 million; 2013: $16 million
2014: $23 million; 2015: $24 million
2016: $25 million; 2017: $26 million
2018: $27 million; 2019: $28 million
2020: $29 million; 2021: $30 million

Total guaranteed = $240 million

Personal services agreement
Sides agree that after the expiration of the contract or Pujols' retirement as a player, they will enter into a 10-year personal services relationship and Pujols will be paid $1 million annually.

Milestone accomplishments
The sides agree they will enter into a separate marketing agreement in which Pujols will be paid for the promotion and marketing of specified milestone accomplishments. Among them are a $3 million payment for 3,000 hits and a $7 million payment for 763 home runs.

Award Bonuses
Most Valuable Player: $500,000
MVP second or third place: $75,000
Gold Glove: $75,000
Silver Slugger: $75,000
All-Star election or selection: $50,000
World Series MVP: $100,000
ALCS MVP: $75,000

Other perks include:

• A hotel suite on road trips.
• A luxury suite at the ballpark for the Pujols Foundation, his charitable group, for 10 home games a year.
• The right to buy a luxury suite between first base and third base for all home games.

Reminds me of that contract that has Bobby Bonilla still a very rich man long after he retired. Silly Angels.

lol who needs to win an MVP with all that other money you'd think those would be higher as they would help the team, ratings, sell games, but no incentive over a million! What a waste of time for him lmao.

Jorge Posada is expected to announce his retirement within the next two weeks, a source tells Sweeny Murti of WFAN in New York.
Posada had reportedly drawn interest from the Rays, Phillies, and Orioles as a backup catcher but reportedly didn't have an interest in being evaluated as a second-tier player. The 40-year-old indicated that he would continue playing in 2012 if he could find the right situation, however, he may have had a hard time finding a guaranteed major-league deal. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has since corroborated the report. Posada will finish seventh all-time in home runs among catchers, in addition to five All-Star appearances and four World Series rings.

Barry Larkin was elected to the Hall of Fame today with 86.4% of the votes. He was the only player that received the necessary 75% of votes needed for election. Next year a lot of the steroid era's most controversial players become eligible for election, with implicated players Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, as well as Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, and Curt Schilling on the ballot for the first time.
