Amazing... simply amazing. I'd love to know where I can work that will pay me $22 mill/year with a private jet for doing a crappy job.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/74...on-source-says

Quote:
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig will be offered an extension to his current contract, a highly placed source said, and baseball executives presume Selig will continue in the job.

Selig, 77, has one more year remaining on his current contract. He has previously said he intends to retire in 2012.

The extension offer will be for at least two years, the source said. It comes at a time when baseball is thriving and has a new labor agreement in place.

It's expected that at some point during the upcoming owners' meetings, which start Wednesday in Scottsdale, Ariz., Selig will be asked to depart the room, and then, as a matter of formality, a motion will be made to extend Selig's contract -- a motion that will be widely supported, according to sources.

Selig's compensation, which includes the use of a private jet, is in excess of $22 million annually, according to a source.

When his current three-year contract extension was approved in 2009, Selig, who had previously said he would retire that year, announced there would be no more extensions.
This comment from ESPN nails it.

Quote:
Selig's legacy:
First cancellation of the World Series in 100 years.
No steroids testing until the US Congress got involved.
Homefield advantage in the WS to the league that wins an exhibition game.
More interleague games that no one wants.
15 small market teams have no chance at making the playoffs under the current structure that is weighted towards the big spenders.
A "tie" All-Star game in Milwaukee because the NL manager ran out of pitchers

I hope this isn't true, Bud Selig is the worst commissioner in my lifetime and that's saying a lot being that Peter Uebberoth was pretty horrific.

They missed a Selig legacy point. Letting the Dodgers be sold to a man with a credit card and nothing else.

As an Astros fan, I would love to see Biggio and Bagwell get in the HOF next year together.
I understand the suspicions about Bagwell though and I love Biggio but do you think he will get in on the first ballot?

They have to. A great 2B in his prime who also hung around long enough to get all the required milestones. 3000 hits, 1800 runs. He also had four gold gloves, five silver sluggers, stole 414 bases (solid 76% sucess rate) and a whopping 668 career doubles (fifth alltime among all position players).

That about says it all for Biggio. I saw him in '91 and he caught. Anyway, he's a lock first ballot entry.

Biggio is a lock for the Hall, though I'm not sure how many think of him as a first ballot member. I could see him taking 2 years for enshrinement.

I don't believe there's ever been a case outside of when the hall of fame was in its infant days that a 3000 hit guy wasn't first ballot. The only guy I see breaking that tradition would Johnny Damon if he gets to 3000 hits. Biggio was a top 2nd baseman in the 90's and deserves the accolades and first ballot. Damon was never even a top 10 outfielder both offensively or defensively. Damon is similar to Harold Baines and he was one and done on the ballot. Don't tell me that 134 more hits for Baines makes him go from sub 5% to 75%. Ditto with Damon.

I find the whole first ballot thing to be ridiculous. Anyone who doesn't vote for someone just because it's their first ballot, but then votes for them on successive ballots are stupid.

The fact that there hasn't been a unanimous selection is another thing which is ridiculous. I mean what did they guy who voted "no" for Nolan Ryan say to defend himself? "He only strikeouts people out, and throws no-hitters, is he really a better pitcher than Jack Morris?"

No surprises that Canadian Richard Griffin voted for a deserving Walker.

Dave Krieger getting carried away voting for Vinny Castilla. His career OPS+ is below replacement level.

I'll bet Biggio gets in quite easily on the first ballot.

3,060 hits
414 stolen bases

7x All-Star
4x Gold Glove winner
5x Silver Slugger

Not even a hint of juicing. And he's very well liked, winning various sportsmanship and community activism awards. Personality shouldn't matter but it clearly does with HOF voters. I think Roberto Alomar had a better career than Biggio but Alomar didn't make it until the second ballot clearly because voters think (mainly due to the spitting incident) he's a jerk. Biggio will make first ballot.

Who should do it then, the fans? Ya... they do such a great job with the All-Star voting. You'd get nothing but NY and Boston players in the HOF then.

One guy getting hosed is the Crime Dog Fred McGriff. For him to fail to get even 25% of the ballots is a joke. He was terrific power hitter in a time when just about everyone juiced and he clearly did not. Unfortunately ending up just shy of 500 HR (493) clearly hurt him with the HOF voters. McGriff also excelled in the post-season, with an avg 20 points higher than he had regular season for his career.

It makes me feel good to see non-Astros fans appreciating Biggio.

I had the pleasure of being in Minute Maid Park when he got his 3000th. I checked the calendar well in advance and bought tickets a month in advance for 3 games where it looked possible for hit 3000. Luckily he came through in the the middle game of that stretch.
I believe he was the first player to get 5 hits in the game where he reached 3000.

Great ballplayer with tons of class. Saw him only once on a sports trip to Cali. He caught the game I saw but took infield before the game at 2nd. They were definitely grooming him to play 2nd. I saw him in '91 but don't recall when he officially moved to the middle infield. Here's the stub from that game. He & Bagwell were just youngsters then.
