Rule: "If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the batterrunner is obstructed before he touches first base, the ball is dead and all runners shall advance, without liability to be put out, to the bases they would have reached, in the umpire’s judgment, if there had been no obstruction."

He was obstructed. In their judgement Craig would have been safe. Doesn't matter if he touched home, doesn't matter if it was intentional. Not a BS call.

They should work on when, where, and how to throw the ball from home to third and they could be up 3-0.

Technically it was a good call, but a lot of times the umps would look the other way on a call like that. I would not have called it to decide a World Series game.

It was a horrible throw by Salty and Middlebrooks did nothing to knock it down. It's an easy score by a normal runner but Craig looks terribly slow with his injury.

I don't care who wins the series...it was a good call and there's no doubt about it. The third baseman lifted his legs and obstructed the runner that it it...he advances.

I feel bad for Middlebrooks. It's not like he did it on purpose. He was worried about leaving his legs down and being tripped over, so he tried to raise them out of the way, and unfortunately, they got even more in the way.

I agree, I don't think anything was "intentional"....but as the rule is written, Intent isn't taken into consideration....He dove for the ball, missed it, was laying there like he should have been, the problem was, he was laying in the base path, which is a no-no. Craig was automatically awarded home plate by the rules. If he hadn't tripped, he would have been safe at home regardless, it wouldn't have been a close play. If Craig wasn't injured and could run normal, it wouldn't have been a close play either.....

Believe me, I want the cards to win more than anyone on this site (just guessing), but I hate to see the game end that way.....but it is the rule. I'd feel the same way if the role was reversed. I actually like this World Series, seems to be two VERY GOOD evenly matched teams....

According to that rule .... Good call. But is a rule with judgement in it a good rule? I think it should address intent.

How can a fielder's unintentionally tripping up a runner be against the rules, but a runner sliding into a base and intentionally trying taking out a fielder trying to turn a double play be "just part of the game"?
