Any trade for Marmol would have the Cubs paying most of his salary and receiving very low-end prospects. Marmol has a ton of talent and maybe a change of scenery would help get his head on straight and back to his 2010 form when he was one of baseball's best relievers. Marmol can block a trade to the Dodgers with his limited no-trade clause but I don't see why he wouldn't want to go there and try and revive his career.

We're just past the midpoint of the season, and [Andrelton] Simmons has racked up 24 Defensive Runs Saved. His lead over all other shortstops is lopsided. You can add the Runs Saved totals for the shortstops with the second-, third-, and fourth-most DRS and they don't add up to Simmons' total.

The Defensive Runs Saved stat, created by Baseball Info Solutions founder John Dewan, has existed since 2003. Simmons has a legit shot at the record for most Defensive Runs Saved in a season, 35 by New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner in 2010, and the most by a shortstop, 34 by Adam Everett of the Houston Astros in 2006. Last year's shortstop leader was Brendan Ryan of the Seattle Mariners. He finished with 27.

The Marmol trade to the Dodgers is complete, and I was wrong about the Cubs paying most of his salary:

It's not the biggest trade the Cubs made on Tuesday, but it's still notable: The maligned Carlos Marmol has been dealt to the Dodgers along with international signing-bonus slot no. four in exchange for fellow reliever Matt Guerrier. The Cubs made the announcement on Tuesday.

According to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat, the Cubs will pay about $500,000 of the $5 million left on Marmol's contract. This season, Marmol is lugging around an ERA of 5.68, but he owns a strong 125 ERA+ for his career. A lack of control will always be the concern with Marmol. The Cubs designated Marmol, age 30, for assignment last week.

As for Guerrier, 34, he has a 3.54 ERA in 513 major league appearances, all but three of which have come in relief. This season, he pitched to a 4.80 ERA before being DFA'd by the Dodgers.

Note to Gibbons.....if this F*ckin has-been starts again, you should be FIRED. Wang has been LIT-LARGE in his last 2 starts and it was only a matter of time until this happened. He needs a ONE-WAY bus ticket out of town, soon to be followed by your sorry ass, should you start his AA arm again.
