Ignore the specifics of Prior. I was simply referring to someone who was viewed as (potentially) the best in the game who flamed out fast.

Scott Boras told reporters he'd like to discuss a 12-year contract with the Nationals for Bryce Harper. It isn't known how much money he's trying to get. I don't know why the Nationals would even discuss signing Harper to a long-term deal at this point unless they got a huge hometown discount (and Boras doesn't give hometown discounts). They've got Harper under a dirt cheap contract and he isn't eligible for arbitration until 2016 and can't be a free agent until after the 2018 season. I could see them maybe discussing a long-term deal in 2016 but why now? I can also see where Boras is coming from. If he could get Harper a 12-year deal now then Harper would hit free agency when he's 32, which is still young enough to get another monster deal.

Typical agent shenanigans from Boras. Teams really seem to overextend themselves when it is not needed. Lincecum was fishing for a big deal after his Cy Young years but the Giants allowed him to go year-to-year through arbitration. That will save them a ton of money next year as Lincecum likely shifts to being a reliever on a different team.

Harper plays reckless defense, he's one play away from crashing into something and permanently hurting himself.

Yup. It's why I think the Braves need to start working on deals for Freeman and Simmons and wait a few years on Heyward.

Kimbrel's free agent years are going to cost the budget-minded Braves too much money. He's the best reliever in the history of the game but a team like the Braves can't afford to throw $15 million a year at a closer. They will likely let him go year-to-year and then let him walk as a free agent.

Simmons is the guy I'd immediately sign to a long-term deal. His defense alone is worth an extension and if the Braves change his swing he's a perennial All-Star.

It would kill the fans, but Freeman is not worth a big deal at the current moment.

Exactly.... he's not worth a big deal right now, so see if you can lock him up for like 7 years at his current value.

And I don't think the Braves will throw $15 million/yr at Kimbrel, but I also don't think they'd have to if they act sooner than later.

It wouldn't surprise me if Volquez is being picked up as a reliever. His stuff probably works better for one inning, when he wouldn't need to pace himself.

The writer goes on to say that even if CSN Houston was a huge success with numerous carriage agreements the Astros wouldn't be making anywhere near the $80 million the previous article states because with regional sports nets there are huge startup costs and teams don't start making huge money until the later years of a deal.
