Boston mayor Thomas Menino has pulled out another of his sports flubs, asking fans to be responsible as the Red Sox try to bring back the World Series Cup.

Some of his other past flubs:

"We have Tom Brady here, we have Tom Brady here, we have Tom Brady here. He's been our point person all season long," Menino said. "And Stevan Ridley, he's been another great guy. And Wilcock."

He of course was referring to All-Pro defensive lineman Vince Wilfork. He also referenced tight end Rob Gronkowski as "Gonk."

That wasn't the first time Menino has stumbled when referencing Gronkowski. When discussing the Patriots' chances in the playoffs against the Broncos in 2012, Menino talked about Tom Brady's weapons "Grabowski" and "Wes Weckler" (Welker).

A few months later, the mayor stuck his foot in his mouth when discussing the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat.

"There's a lot of heart in this team, let me just tell you," Menino said, before adding, "KJ is great but Hondo is really the inspiration. Hondo drives that team."

KJ should have been KG, Kevin Garnett. And Hondo was Celtics legend John Havlicek's nickname. Menino was referring to Celtics guard Rajon Rondo there.

Menino's most infamous reference came in 2010, when dedicating a statue to Bruins legend Bobby Orr's "ionic" goal to win the 1970 Stanley Cup. In discussing some of the best moments in Boston sports, Menino said it was Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek who "split the uprights" to win the Patriots' first Super Bowl in 2002. He was of course referring to Adam Vinatieri.

Why did we just pay Lincecum $35 million for 2 years smh

He's on the decline, and 2 year $10 million per sounds reasonable... he must be kicking himself for not taking the 5 year $100 million we offered him the year before he started sucking

The guy just stinks at public speaking overall. His nickname is "mumbles Menino." I never quite understood his popularity. But yes, he's especially bad with sports. He tries to act knowledgable when it's plainly obvious he knows nothing about sports.

I was wondering what they were thinking. Lincecum's ERA the past two season was 5.18 and 4.37. They're paying him as though they expect him to return to sub 3.00 ERA form, which seems unlikely.

He signed that deal coming off a 2010 season in which he posted a 2.74 ERA (127 ERA+) over 217 innings and finished sixth in the Cy Young voting. Over the last two seasons, Lincecum has posted a 4.76 ERA, which translates to a 72 ERA+ that is tied for the worst among major-league pitchers with 300 or more innings over those two seasons. The men he is tied with are Edinson Volquez, who was released by the Padres in August, and, in what should have been a giant red flag for Sabean, Barry Zito.
