I'm not saying he's a bad player, just a terrible contract for someone who's regressed past few years

If anything you should have compared him to Carl Crawford and his contract. Power isn't the only thing that wins games or guarantees a big paycheck. Let us not forget how friendly Yankee Stadium is to lefties. This is a game that is constantly evolving and the Yankees just need more base-runners. So they went and got the best base-runner in the game.

The Ellsbury contract works great for Scott Boras. It gets his client more than expected and it will make it a lot harder for the Yankees to re-sign Boras' former client Robinson Cano, who left him for Jay-Z's agency. Cano clearly wants to stay with the Yankees but with Ellsbury's deal the Yankees aren't going to be able to offer near what Cano wants and stay under the $189 million luxury tax. Right now they have $139 million in 10 signed players for next season and another $15 million is expected to be paid to their 5 arbitration-eligible players. That leaves them with just $35 million remaining for 10 players if they are determined to stay under the tax, and if they signed Cano they'd have to fill the remaining roster spots with mainly minimum salary players. The Yankees might try to get Cano to delay signing until they know how the Alex Rodriguez appeal is decided as that decision could open up an additional $26 million in payroll, but he may not be willing to wait.

The Yankees have made an offer to Omar Infante, id say the Cano ship has sailed.

Quote:
FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Yankees have made a contract offer to Omar Infante.

Morosi notes, though, that Infante has multiple offers, and other teams are "more serious" than the Yankees. In other words, the Yankees are likely viewing him more as infield insurance due to his versatility rather than as a possible replacement for Robinson Cano. Morosi adds that the Yanks have also presented offers to Stephen Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury, Shin-Soo Choo and Carlos Beltran. Dec 3 - 7:00 PM

That Ellsbury contract is going to bite us in the @$$ big time down the road. They could have easily given Beltran a 2yr deal with a option for a 3rd (player option at worst). That contract would have been a total of $60 mil at most and we could have used that money we saved and used it on pitching, and then given Cano a $175 million deal for 7 yrs (25 mil a year). Not to mention that Ellsbury is made out of glass. The ironic part is that the Yankees are trying to cut down on those types of contracts only to turn around and overpay a guy who's worth no more than half the contract he got.

The funny part is when I found out about the signing, I said out loud, no, no, no, no, no. When we signed Mcann, I said out loud, yes, yes, yes, yes. Now, according to ESPN, we won't trade Garnder. Is Hank (Steinbrenner) running things again? Also, it looks like the Granderson to the Mets talks are starting to intensify. That would be a great signing for them.

I never said that the signing was a good one. It's far too rich, but at least we will be paying him in his "prime" years (30-36). He plays very good defense and will be a force atop the lineup. Injury is certainly a concern, but if healthy he will put up pretty good numbers. The short porch of Yankee Stadium will help the power numbers. There is no way that we invest in this type of deal to let Cano walk. Cano will be resigned. There's no doubt in mind he will be a Yankee.

I think its a good signing, just not for that much money, hes still a pretty good player...

You really think Cano will stay a Yank?

Signing Beltran would have been the smarter move.

The Mariners reportedly offered Robinson Cano a 9-year, $225 million deal, but Jay-Z came back to them asking for a 10th year that would make the deal equivalent to Alex Rodriguez's 10-year, $252 million deal and the Mariners are supposedly so mad at that request that they may pull the offer entirely. Scott Boras has got to be loving this.

Seriously? What a joke this has become. Cano is no where near what Alex was at 25.

Apparently the mariners GM got so pissed off he told Jay Z to go F himself and left the meeting pulling everything entirely. This is the problem with inexperienced agents handling huge negotiations, I give Boras credit he may be the bain of baseball but at least he knows when to stop trying to push. And the yankees at this point have to be HOPING Infante says yes to there deal if so then there will be no suitors left for Cano and a huge ass contract he and every other MLB player is not worth.

Infante is not higher on their priority list. Perhaps they sign both and put Infante at 3rd.

Multiple reporters are saying Cano and the Mariners have a deal. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports says it's for 10 years and $240 million.

I guess even the Mariners aren't immune from making horrendous deals. I thought they had a lifetime pass after locking up King Felix, but they blew that now.
