You guys sound like a bunch of whiny fans upset that he wanted 9/10 years instead of the 7 you were offering. He made his choice, and only time is going to tell if the gamble pays off. Everyone thought Pudge was CRAZY for taking the money and coming to Detroit, now look at us were actually a FA destination in Baseball again. I have seen it work here, it can work in Seattle if they get the right pieces.
Pray tell what happened to that Mariners team again. The team that has the most wins in MLB history is the 1998 NY Yankees .

Look at Pudge and Ordonez pricey contracts but it paid off and revived a city.

What makes you think Cano cannot be a player to be built around? Seattle has shown in the past 10 years they are a team that can win games... hello... 116 wins only team since the 1906 cubs to do that. When we picked up Doug Fister the guy had an ERA of like 3.20 and was getting a run support of 1-2 runs a game and losing games.

All Seattle has to do is add some run support and they are a team to be on the watch for. Now the question here is can Cano be the guy to manufacture those runs? Or... were those numbers healthily inflated due to the home ballpark he played in. You Yankee fans that seem to think this is horrible STILL TO THIS DAY have not provided any hard nose straight statistics to back what you are saying. Not one of you has provided hard nose statistical numbers to back your expectations of this being a bad signing. Provide the numbers back up what you are saying with statistics and then we will have a good conversation.
You want numbers. How about he's only hit 30 HRs in a single season and that's with Yankee Stadium as his home field. Safeco is a different beast. Look at his numbers there. And look at his postseason numbers. .222 BA with a sub .700 OPS. He's one of the best 2B hands down, but his numbers will suffer next year. I would want him on my team, but not for 10 years and 240 million. He's in his prime now, but 6 years from now will it still be a good contract...

Tanaka has been posted. Let the bidding begin. I expect the Yanks to go after him hard.

They can only put up the $20 million and hope he picks them. They can't just openly negotiate.

That's the old system. There is now a new system in place.

I don't understand how this "new agreement" changed anything for Tanaka. His team can still only make $20 million off the deal.

Yes. If a team wants to spend $20 million on the posting fee, they can then negotiate with the player and if they come to an agreement, the player signs with the team. Essentially the player is no longer subject to the highest bidder of the posting fee, and can now negotiate with any team who wishes to bid the maximum. If no one bids the max, then the highest posting bid would receive priority.

Yeah, but yesterday, it was all the same except he had to pick among the top postings before negotiating.

From what I'm reading it doesn't say that he has to pick a team before negotiating. Can you show me a link where it says that?

That's what the rule was before they reached the new agreement this morning.

The Rakuten Golden Eagles are now reportedly saying they will not post Masahiro Tanaka this year. From a financial perspective it makes sense to not post him. They can only get a maximum of $20 million in posting fees under the new system and Tanaka is signed for 2 more years so they could keep him this year and then let him post next year for the same amount of money. Rakuten is going to give Tanaka a raise that will double or triple his current $4 million salary and make him the highest-paid pitcher in Japanese history, but that still won't come close to what he could have made in the US, and if he gets hurt he won't have the long-term security he could get with a 5 or 6 year deal in the US. Rakuten will reportedly meet with Tanaka on Friday to tell him they won't let him post.

I've been hearing the Cubs really want Tanaka and won't be outbid, but that they think it will be difficult to get him to come to Chicago. From what I've read Tanaka doesn't want to join a rebuilding team and would rather be in New York or Los Angeles. It makes sense for the Cubs to go all-in for Tanaka. They are flush with cash (although their owner still has a lot of debt from buying the team) and only have about $54 million committed to next year's payroll. They have one of the top farm systems with several position players that are near major-league ready so they likely view themselves as potential playoff contenders in 2015, but they need to greatly improve their pitching staff.

I think the Yankees will be hard to beat for his services. He's number 1 on their priority, and when that's the case, they usually get their way at least when it comes to free agents.

If the Yankees truly covet Tanka I have no doub they'll get him. The problem is when Tanaka posts the Yankees may not know the status for A Rod. Are they willing to risk a payroll of well over $200 million in order to get Tanaka, when going over the luxury tax line of $189 million could cost them over $100 million over the next 2 years in repeat offender luxury tax payments? The Yankees can certainly afford the tax payments but they have to deem whether Tanaka is worth it.
