Agreed. And everyone from Hal Levine and Cashman have all said the mandate is more flexible than rigid. Time will tell, but I think they go after him hard.

I also agree. I'm pretty sure A-Rod won't be playing ball this year so hopefully that keeps them under the tax limit. Either through Tanaka or other free agents, the Yankees are going to sign someone so hopefully the get Tanaka. If they get a guy like him I can see the entire rotation start to stabilize. Sabathia can no longer be the guy in the #1 spot anymore.

According to an exit poll conducted by Baseball Think Factory four players are expected to make the 2014 MLB HOF. The did this same exit poll last year and same within 10% of the actual result for every player on the ballot. Their numbers have Maddux, Glavine, Thomas and Biggio making the cut. Those coming close but missing out are Piazza (72%) and Bagwell (65%). Bonds and Clemens are each at about 45% of the vote.

The Loney signing by the Rays really shows how cheap ownership has been over the years.

$21 million over three years is the largest free agent contract they've ever given.

Idiots like this guy do not deserve a Hall of Fame vote:

Quote:
KEN GURNICK, Dodgers beat reporter
Morris

Morris has flaws -- a 3.90 ERA, for example. But he gets my vote for more than a decade of ace performance that included three 20-win seasons, Cy Young Award votes in seven seasons and Most Valuable Players votes in five. As for those who played during the period of PED use, I won't vote for any of them.

Yes, Gurnick voted for Jack Morris and no one else.

Those HOF voters have always been a screwy bunch. Heck, Babe Ruth was elected to the HOF with 95% of the vote. Ya, somehow 5% of the voters thought the greatest player of all-time wasn't HOF worthy. Lou Gehrig only drew 22% of the vote his first time on the ballot and was only votes in 3 years later.

My biggest problem is how can you say Maddux played in the PED era but Morris didn't? Their careers overlapped by 9 seasons. Morris pitched until 1994, and Jose Canseco publicly said he stated that he was using steroids and teaching others how to use steroids by the time he reached the majors in 1985. That means for roughly half of Morris' career it's known that players juicing.

Apparently he's decided to abstain from voting going forward. He also said he would not include Mariano because of the era.

If your going to be a complete jack***, at least vote for someone better than Jack Morris. Vote for Tim Raines instead of wasting your ballot completely.

I'm a Braves fan since as long as I can remember (I'm 23, been watching baseball since I was 6). I live in GA, but for those who didn't you had the privilege like me to watch Maddux pitch on TBS for the Braves on national TV almost every start (back then TBS Superstation carried 150+ Braves games a season).

I am absolutely disgusted and appalled with this guy. I know the writers have this stupid tradition of not voting anyone unanimously because Ted Williams, Cy Young, Ruth, Mays, Aaron never got unanimous.

Old guard can stick it. If there's ANYBODY who should get unanimous consent to the hall of fame, it's Greg Maddux.

He was the absolute mark of consistency. He won 4 straight Cy Young awards (some of those seasons overlapped with Morris' career), he and Tom Glavine are the only pitchers to ever pitch 30 starts in 20 straight seasons I think. He won 15 games in a row for 17 seasons in a row I believe. Unlike Clemens, Randy, Pedro, he never had a 97+ fastball to get you out. He basically was a pitcher not a thrower. He could hit the catcher's target without having to move the mitt. Most wins of any pitcher since the WW2 era, has more wins than Clemens who we all know has been linked to PED's.

My favorite player growing up for sure. THe fact he pitched against roided guys should make he and Glavine's resume all even more impressive.

Now that Gurnick has done the "honorable" thing of making sure Maddux isn't allowed 100%, I hope the other writers don't cower and give him the 99.9% or at least eclipse Tom Seaver's mark of highest %.

Smoltz, Randy Johnson, Pedro are all up for vote next year... following year I believe is Griffey Jr.

If Maddux does get 99.9%, then Randy Johnson will likely get 100% since Gurnick says he's no longer voting.

The 2013 HOF Ballot Collecting Gizmo! has the following through 188 ballots (~ 33%):

99.5 (187) - Maddux
95.7 (180) - Glavine
90.4 (170) - F. Thomas
78.7 (148) - Biggio
———————————
68.6 - Piazza
60.6 - Jack (The Jack) Morris
59.0 - Bagwell
55.3 - Raines
43.1 - Bonds
41.5 - Clemens
36.7 - Schilling
26.6 - Mussina
25.5 - E. Martinez
25.0 - L. Smith
22.9 - Trammell
15.4 - Kent
12.2 - McGriff
11.1 - McGwire
8.5 - L. Walker
8.0 - S. Sosa
6.4 - R. Palmeiro
5.3 - Mattingly
———————————
0.5 - P. Rose (Write-In)

So, to get in here's what the top guys need on the remaining 66% (assuming it's the same number of ballots as last year):
Maddux - 62.8% (236)
Glavine - 64.6% (243)
F. Thomas - 67.3% (253)
Biggio - 73.1% (275)
Piazza - 78.2% (294)
Jack (The Jack) Morris - 82.2% (309)
Bagwell - 82.9% (312)
Raines - 84.8% (319)

Everybody below Schilling is already out for this year, with the other 3 (Bonds, Clemens and Schilling) needing ridiculous numbers of votes on the remaining (Schilling needs to be on 94.1% of outstanding ballots).

No because someone will argue if Maddux didn't get 100%, RJ shouldn't.

I personally think there's a conspiracy from the writers to either elect Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera as the first 100% unanimous vote...

With respect to the HOF vote, let me present the following about some of the guys on the ballot.

These #s are based on their career statistics and are for a 162 game average, as listed at baseball-reference.com. I don't want to give too much away about their identities, but both have started more than 500 games and have pitched more than 4000 innings. So they've been around, or were around, for quite a while.

Pitcher A:
W-L = 15-10
GS = 34
CG = 3
SHO = 1
IP = 220
H = 214
HR = 18
BB = 75
K = 130
ERA = 3.54 (.62 below the league average for his career)
WHIP = 1.314

Pitcher B:
W-L = 17-10
GS = 34
CG = 4
SHO = 1
IP = 226
H = 219
HR = 24
BB = 50
K = 178
ERA = 3.68 (.83 below the league average for his career)
WHIP = 1.192

Based on these #s and not knowing their names though I'm sure you can figure out who is who, who would you say was the better pitcher? It's close but I think one is statistically superior.

Yes, Mussina might have better average season stats than Glavine, but you have to look at longevity as well. If Glavine had only pitched 18 seasons like Mussina he would have been a borderline Hall of Fame candidate because he would have only had 262 wins, but those 4 extra years solidified him as a Hall of Famer because it put him over 300 wins. If Mussina had pitched 2 or 3 more years and gotten 300 wins he would have been a lock for the HOF, since every eligible 300 win pitcher is in the HOF with the exception of Clemens, but he chose retire after one of his best seasons. Fair or not the absence of 300 wins, no World Series titles, and never finishing in the top 3 in Cy Young voting will likely keep him out for several years.

I'm sure that if Moose hung around to get to 300 wins he'd be labeled a compiler and people would argue the only reason he reached 300 wins is b/c he pitched 21 years. The Cy Young argument has always struck me as ridiculous. There are plenty of guys who are good one year and then gone the next. Moose was consistent. Maybe he didn't always have the best season a pitcher had but he was always consistent, which is something most HOFers have in common. As for the lack of rings, it's too bad for him that Mariano Rivera blew a save game 7 back in 2001. He and Glavine have very similar postseason #s.

I'd take MM over TG every day of the week. He was the better pitcher and if you consider his #s were 100% in the AL East compared to Glavine pitching in the NL it's even more impressive. It's not like he pitched for 10 years. 18 years is a pretty long run. It's crazy that Glavine will be 90% of the vote and Moose will be lucky to break 30%.
