Tigers trade LHP Jose Alvarez (I don't even remember this guy) to Angels for INF Andrew Romine

Alvarez got off to a nice start with the Tigers last season but ultimately wound up with a 5.82 ERA over 38 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old posted a nice 2.80 ERA and 115/25 K/BB ratio over 128 2/3 Triple-A innings in 2013 and will likely begin at that level for the Halos.

Romine will give the Tigers another option at shortstop as they look to replace Jose Iglesias (shins). The 28-year-old isn't much at the plate (he's hit .250/.303/.270 over 74 games in the majors), but he can run a bit. It's possible he'll wind up with some deep league value as a cheap speed option. Romine will be competing with Danny Worth, Hernan Perez and Eugenio Suarez for at-bats at shortstop.

Gets much worse man, Tigers are in serious trouble. Rondone needs Tommy John hes done for the year, and Sanchez is getting Cortisone shots. We officially have no bullpen again.

Bruce Rondon needs Tommy John surgery and will miss all of the 2014 season.

Rondon dealt with elbow issues last season, but he was feeling fine in camp until earlier this week when he reported some soreness to the Tigers. As it turns out, an exam revealed the worst possible news. With Rondon on the shelf, Joba Chamberlain is the favorite to be Joe Nathan's setup man. Al Alburquerque should also see more high-leverage innings.

Anibal Sanchez (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Saturday.

Sanchez was given a cortisone shot on Tuesday and played catch Thursday with no issues. If Saturday's bullpen session goes off without a hitch, Sanchez will pitch in a minor league game on Monday. The right-hander's shoulder issue is a red flag, but for the moment it's looking like he'll avoid the disabled list to start the season.

The Tigers announced Sunday morning that Max Scherzer rejected a "substantial, long-term contract offer" that "would have placed him among the highest paid pitchers in baseball" and extension talks have broken off.

It's rather odd that the Tigers felt compelled to announce the development in this way, but the end result shouldn't surprise anyone after the reigning American League Cy Young winner made clear over the winter that his negotiation deadline was Opening Day. Scherzer will be able to name his price next winter if he can produce a reasonable facsimile to last season's 21-3 record, 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts. Scherzer's camp surely asked Detroit for an offer that would have easily topped Homer Bailey's recent six-year, $105 million deal. "Moving forward," Detroit's statement on the matter closes, "there will be no further in-season negotiations and the organization will refrain from commenting on this matter."

Good. He isn't worth the money. Idk if you watched a few years ago but he was very up and down. One start he'd be great the next you knew he'd be terrible.

I don't think he's as good as people think. I hope he does well this year, and gets his money elsewhere.

Max Scherzer's agent Scott Boras told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick that the Tigers rejected a contract offer from the right-hander's camp and not the other way around.

The Tigers released a statement Sunday saying Scherzer had rejected a "substantial, long-term contract offer," but Boras claims the team was the one that actually turned down Scherzer's extension offer. Boras isn't usually one to be believed, but that would actually make more sense than the idea of Scherzer rejecting something close to the $25.7 million AAV Justin Verlander got from the club, which ESPN's Jayson Stark had reported. Either way, the talks have broken off and Scherzer appears headed to a large payday next winter on the open market.

According to Jim Bowden of ESPN and SiriusXM, Max Scherzer wants an eight-year deal from the Tigers.

And the Tigers offered him six years at $144 million. The two sides have cut off talks and might not reopen them until the end of the 2014 season -- if at all. Scherzer deserves to cash in big after winning American League Cy Young Award honors last season. And he will cash in big if he repeats his numbers from 2013 and then hits the open market.

22M a year. Just outside the top-10 in highest paid starting pitchers. I guess that is fair..I still think it's way too high. He's a 12-15M year player (when he's playing good) imho

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that Miguel Cabrera's contract extension is for eight years and will be added on to the end of his current deal that expires after 2015.

That means the American League's back-to-back MVP will be with the Tigers for 10 more years, and he's expected to receive just under $300 million over that span. There's little doubt that Cabrera is the best hitter in the game, but paying him around $30 million past his 40th birthday seems a bit much. Nevertheless, Detroit fans will be glad to know that Miggy will retire as a Tiger.

Very happy we gave Cabrera this well earned money over Scherzer. I hope we can still work out some fair deal with Scherzer but I don't see it happening with him wanting a long-term deal. I understand him wanting to cash in at his peak but I'd rather not foot the bill if it's 4+ years.

Nobody is worth 30 mil a year. Ridiculous. Not a pitcher, not a soon to be DH. Miggy just keeps getting bigger. Can't stand the way teams throw money around. I'm not trying to begrudge somebody's way to make money, but ten years?

Eventually they are going to regret that contract. Might not be for 6-7 years but it is inevitable. Just like we are regretting the AROD contract, and we will eventually be regretting CC's contract. For most Tigers fans it will be worth it if they win a WS. The question is will they?

There's multiple numbers being reported

Appears the Detroit Tigers and two-time defending AL MVP Miguel Cabrera have agreed in principle on an extension.

In listening to Heyman on MLB Network, he stated that the terms of the extension would be at least seven years and $200 million. Tack on seven years to his current deal (in which Cabrera has two years remaining), Miggy would be a Tiger until he is 39 years of age. (He’ll be 31 in mid-April). Under the terms of his current deal, Cabrera will make $22 million in each of the next two seasons.

Either Way Miggy is a Tiger for life and when were done with him like everyone else well just dump him off to the Yankees when hes around 36 years old They take anyone lol.

If he has injury problems and we "lose" on the deal, whatever. He earned this contract.
