If he has injury problems and we "lose" on the deal, whatever. He earned this contract.

If you honestly think he's going to be worth 25 million in 4 years then you're just as naive as the team who is paying him.

4 maybe. But 8 years from now they will have regretted this contract.

10 years for 292 million is the largest contract ever given. One in which he will be 40 when it ends. Let's see how you feel 7 years from now.

Okay, let's look at the history of other related contracts. Pujols, Hamilton, I'd even say Verlander was a bust.

Uh no man its going to be a bad deal once he reaches 35 or so that contract was about 3 years to long, the Verlander deal also about 3 years to long but its not my money spent.

From Buster Olney's column this morning:

Quote:
To understand just how terrible the industry reviews are of the Detroit Tigers' deal with Miguel Cabrera, it's appropriate to draw on the examples from the movie industry.

The Cabrera deal, in the eyes, of rival executives, is Disaster Movie bad.

The Cabrera deal, in the eyes of officials with other teams, is Battlefield Earth bad.
It's is Heaven's Gate bad. It is Sahara bad.

Folks from around the sport believe that Cabrera's deal is a guaranteed loser, and they do not understand what the Tigers could be thinking to sign on for this money pit that they know will have ripple effects on the entire industry.

"I just don't get it," said one high-ranking NL executive. "They lost their minds."

Said another: "It's an awful deal for the Tigers, and it's worse for baseball.
Olney goes on to write that rival executives believe the Tigers could have waited at least another year to make sure Cabrera stays healthy before giving him this extension. They also thought that the Tigers could have offered Cabrera a 3-year, $105 million extension or even a 3-year, $135 million extension (in addition to the 2 years left on his current deal) and it's unlikely Cabrera would have turned it down, potentially saving the Tigers over $100 million.

I would have offered him an extension yes but only 4 years so he was a FA again at 37/38 This team is going to be hurting having JV and Miggy at the twilight of their careers wrapped up for 20 million each.

However bad it was every executive *****ing about how bad it was would have done the same damn thing lol. For god sakes the Yankees gave 155 million to a guy who has never pitched 1 day in MLB. Angels gave how much to Hamilton and Pujols? God knows how much Trout is going to get next year. Dodgers have like a 700 Million dollar payroll, but the Tigers do it and OMG its bad for Baseball.

While I'm not one for giving contracts that big (yrs wise) especially players Who are at least 30, one has to imagine how much Mike Trout is going to make when he hits the market (he's only 22).

It's the fact that Miggy is 30 (about to be 31) and players who get contracts that high amount and amount of yrs never turn out good (A-Rod, Puljos, Hamilton, and the M's are crossing their fingers on Cano). If Mike Trout gets that amount, (he's only 22) not many people will complain about it.

It has nothing to do with the Tigers organization.

Anyone that's crazy enough to sign a 30 year old man to a $300 million contract deserves to be called out for it. So please restrain yourself from being biased.

You're the guy that's always calling out the Yankees clubhouse. Plus everyone was gonna offer Tanaka a contract well over $120 million. The Yankees just took the risk to sign him for a couple extra years. Which is fine considering his age. No matter what league he plays in, his splitter is still one of the nastiest pitches in the world.

All it takes is one injury to make this enormous deal a mistake. Remember Carl Pavano?

8 year 250m officially with two years of club options for 30m each (probably wont happen)

I still think it's a fair deal. Were you gonna sign him for less than Pujols?

Zero chance

Funny how you mention those guys yet you fail to mention the worst contract in MLB history given by the Yankees, A-rod

My comment was not directed at anyone on this forum. It was more directed at the executives in the article talking about how it was bad for Baseball. I don't think its a good deal I think its 3-4 years to long as its another classic case of awarding a player for what he has done not what he will do. I said in previous comments the Miggy and JV deals were bad deals.

I call out the Yankees a lot because they are notorious for bad contracts.

Angels, Dodgers, Tigers, Boston are right up there with them now.

I think all of Baseball was crazy for wanting to offer all that money for Tanka, and the 20 million "negotiation clause" for Japanese players is retarded. The entire system is broken that's the problem.

These 2-300 million dollar players are not worth it plain and simple. I would prefer a base salary for these players Type A-E, and some incentive program for them to get more money based on what they do in a given year not what they have done the past 5. I would be one for Olympic style testing in MLB/NFL/NHL/NBA etc during the season. Hey if a player gets caught there gone.

Sadly sports don't think like this and this is the reason we have retarded ass contracts that do nothing but milk the fan for everything they have in their pockets.

A-Rod carried the Yanks to a championship in '09. So there's that...

My point is that no team should pay these guys this type of money, not one of these HUGE deals has ever worked out, when will they learn

And the fact that these contracts are iron clad guarenteed makes it even worse

His contract isn't the worst of all time though. His stats for the Yankees were incredible until the last few years. But Hamilton and Pujols really need to bounce back to make their contracts seem necessary at this point.

I agree with you. These contracts are proof that MLB hypes their stars wayyyy too much. Also I think that Upton contract should be brought up as well. I really hope the Braves find a way out of it.

The Angels and superstar center fielder Mike Trout are close to finalizing a six-year contract extension that’s worth slightly more than $140 million, industry sources told MLB.com on Friday.
