Yup, that's a cop-out to say they're good only because of a high payroll, the Sox's best players IMO come from their farm league system anyway. And look at other high payroll teams who stink - there's no real correlation there...

The Redsox are a big market team, they have the resources to spend that type of money. This doesn't mean that they throw money at every single problem they have like the Yankees do.

Take a look at the Redsox farm system, they have talent at all levels and Theo has loaded up on young, solid arms.

They are built to be competitive year in and year out spending money on key free agents while building a core of home grown players.

This is something the Yankees have failed to do since the 90s.

I'm ok with the Red Sox payroll as they continue to grow and develope their talent and then sign them to big contracts.

Unlike the Mets, Yanks...etc who over pay so no one else can get their hands on FA who then end up sucking.

See below, worst FA signings so far:

Mark Teixeira, Yankees: .206/.363/.381 in 80 plate appearances. This contract runs through 2016, so it's barely begun.

C.C. Sabathia, Yankees: 4.73 ERA in 32.3 innings. So far we haven't seen the expected walk and strikeout rates. This one runs through 2015.

A.J. Burnett, Yankees: 5.47 ERA in 24.6 innings. Home runs and walks have been the problem so far. He's signed through 2013.

Oliver Perez, Mets: 9.31 ERA in 19.3 innings. Control has been the biggest problem, and there's already talk of moving him to the bullpen. Perez is signed through 2011.

And so on................

I love Teixeira but not at the price the Yankees were willing to pay. He's a notorious slow starter so he'll get his numbers by the end of the year.

Sabathia is due for an ERA correction because he's pitches in a deadly AL East division.

You forgot Milton Bradley. 3 years/$30 million, currently hitting .107 (was hitting .40 before getting 2 hits last night to up his season total to 3 hits), has already missed 5 games due to injury and was a 1 AB pinch hitter in 4 other games. Is currently appealing a 2 game suspension for bumping an umpire because he believes he never touched the umpire, even though he could have helped the team by just serving the suspension while he was hurt and will likely now miss games when he's healthy.

I'm a Cubs fan and I thought that contract was crazy. $10 million/year for a guy who has never played 150 games in a season, has played less than 100 games 4 times, and has such a bad temper that he tore an ACL arguing a call. Throw in the fact that he hates the media, and that Chicago very vocal, constant media and you'll see why he never should have been signed. He should have gone somewhere like Washington or Florida where he wouldn't have to deal with the media everyday.

Um no if he is so good, then it should just be better. he has pitched mainly against non-AL East teams so far hasn't he?!?!

No excuses for Mr Massive-Overpaid

What I said was that he was due for a stat correction from his 2008 ERA of 2.70. There's no way he'll have that pitching mainly in the AL...especially the AL East.

I'm looking at the 3.75 range

Ohhhh ok got ya now... my apologies!

I do think his numbers were better in the NL last year because it was the NL... pitching against pitchers and it being a different type of game.

I'm surprised CC didn't stay in the NL... since he was also hitting alot of home runs himself haha

CC made it clear he wanted to stay in the NL but nobody would come near the money the Yankees had. He would have loved to go home to a California team or stay in Milwaukee but when one team is offering $60 million more than anyone else you've got to go.

Yeah never understood that... why offer 60 million more... why not 10 more and then work your way up if you need too... just silly... looks good on that Yankees with all those empty seats now! Should be alot more careful with their $$$!

Crazy 10th inning between the Marlins and the Cubs last night. You gotta love the squeeze play!

yeah its really funny how that happens look at JD drew lol 50+ million and hasnt really lived up to that had some GREAT great single game performances I give them credit they aren't on the other teams levels like going out and paying the most for the biggest name.

they do it right and thats why they will continue to dominate

I'm dreading when A Rod returns to the Yankees. Getting tired of hearing about his constant issues right now, and it will only get worse when he returns.

I hate that guy soooooooooo much.

The story is him stealing his own team's signs and signaling them to opposing team's batters did it for me. That scene he caused in Toronto a couple years back where he yelled "MINE" behind the third baseman causing him to drop the ball all makes sense now...

... A-Rod is a poor excuse of a human being! Not a Yanks fan at all, but if they ever want a WS again, they better drop this selfish lying clown!

Jays look good and of course O's have zero quality pitching lol our 2 best starters would be 3-5 starters on any quality staff...

if the jays just get 1-2 good closers they could be rays like.

Wells crushed us as usual lol

its scary to think how good the jays could be with a bit more of payroll money if they'd spent some green on Krod and burnett
